I’ve had my two dogs since I was 13 years old. I’m 30 now, and in July of 2018, both of them had to be put down within 5 days of each other. It was really rough. But, it does get better.

Reading through this thread actually helped me:

So many people have gone through the same exact thing.

I am sorry for your loss. I haven’t owned a pet in years.

In the last relationship I was in there were 4 dogs in the house. That 15 year relationship had an ugly ending in 2011. As I was moving out, she kept herself locked in the master bedroom with all of the dogs so I didn’t get to say good bye to them.

Maya was almost “my dog”. During the good times, I was told that every day I went to the office at 6:45 Maya would walk to the front door and sit on the mat staring at the door until I got home (I usually got home around 7:00). Every time I walked into a room Maya was in, she rolled over for me to rub her belly.

I remember that on the day I left, when I got to my car and looked up at the house one last time; my first thought was “At least I won’t be around when the pups have to be put down.” As time went by I realized that the end of that relationship was for the best, but I still missed those pups, especially Maya.

Remember your good times with your pup.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Dogs are awesome and make us feel like we're better people than we are. They don't care if we're late getting home. They're just glad we're home.

I've put two Labs down, and, each time, it took me several days to not think every shadow was one of them coming to greet me. Remember the good times you had and seek comfort in the fact that your dog led a great life because of you.

Getting a new dog will help, and you will know when the time is right. There are thousands out there that need a good home like yours.

I've been there. Lost my black dog many years ago. For a very long time, when the kids would leave a book bag on the couch, I would think it was him, or I'd swear I'd hear him at the door. It took a long time to get over. Sorry for your loss. The way you feel is normal.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry. I dread the day I lose my dog. He is my best friend.

I can’t wrap my head around it. My dog got very sick at Thanksgiving and spent 6 days in the ICU. She’s still sick, but doing better. My heart can’t take the idea of losing her. Pets are just so amazing.

Sorry to hear this.

I lost my guy last year, and I still think about him often. It get's easier but it takes a while. What'll get you is you'll notice how your day-to-day routine is different. Maybe not huge things, but little things.

For example: it took me months to stop rushing to pick up dropped food on the floor while cooking before he could get it. It was a habit and kind of a game for us, who would get it faster. After he died and I realized I was just racing myself to get it, it felt like a knife in my gut all over again.

I found pictures helped quite a bit. I scoured my phones and accounts and consolidated all the pictures I had of him in one place. I still look through them.

It takes time. It took a few weeks turning my head to the ground behind me to realize my pets weren't there anymore.

It sucks

Damn.

Somebody decided to start chopping onions in here...

Generally speaking (not you Iona), we humans don’t deserve dogs.

The last dog I had that died, I cried like a baby. You don't realize how much they become second nature in your life. The things I was used to doing for him, i'd still go to do and he wasn't there. I got a new pup a few days after he passed because I don't like being without a dog..

quote:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I lost my 8 yr old boxer to lymphoma about 5 years ago. Wow, I cant believe it’s been that long. He was there for everything, graduating from school, buying my first house, relationships and break ups, all of the ups and downs. He was one of the only constants of pure love aside from my close friends and family. Its not possible to “replace” something like that when you lose it. It gets better in time, I promise you that. I now have a 4 yr old boxer that is just as much of a pain in the arse as the last one was and dishes out the same amount of drool, weird stories, and love.

I understand your heartbreak. My 14 year old Lab died in my arms about three months ago. They say the hurt will get better. So far it hasn't gotten much better.
