The perfect storm for the success of St. George is on the way.

Greater Baton Rouge Business Report Story

quote:

As Baton Rouge’s racial divide becomes more evident, particularly at the Metro Council level, the NAACP and several other organizations are pushing to separate city-parish governance into two entities—one for the city of Baton Rouge; the other, for East Baton Rouge Parish. The issue most recently arose at last week’s Metro Council meeting, but plans to untangle the city and parish into two separate governments have been in the works for years, says Mike McClanahan, president of NAACP Baton Rouge.

To change existing law, those supporting the move must petition to alter specific provisions in the Plan of Government—the constitution for the city-parish—with supporting signatures of 10% of those who voted in the most recent parishwide election, notes Ashley Beck, Metro Council administrator-treasurer. The Metro Council would then decide whether to place the item on the next parishwide ballot.

McClanahan says the NAACP has been in talks with city-parish administrators, fashioning the proper legal language for the petition and ballot item. Other ministerial groups and social organizations are also interested in backing the issue, he adds.

Support. The mayor should not also be the parish president.

I feel like the current system benefits the CP. I figured the rest of the Parish wanted to get away from BR.

What am I missing here?

Blacks want to control the vote in Baton Rouge. So long as there is a Metro-Council, that will never happen. This is their ultra-desperate course of action when their desperate course of action to usurp Buddy Amoroso's seat failed.

I look forward to all of the Advocate articles labeling this as a racist breakaway.

Also, why are they seeking this? Have they studied where the tax revenue in this area comes from?

Oh but no. Expect a milking of the people currently living in BR and not subject to St. George. I'm about to be fricked like no other.

If they don't get their way, expect a move like NAACP did in St.Louis, calling for a boycott of their own city. LOL

Yeah, don't have people come to your city and spend money, that will show the City.

As a resident of the parish and not this city how is this not good for me too? Let the city burn for all I care

Yeah, that's a pretty exaggerated number. Not to mention that he's assuming all the people at those games are EBR residents and would support this

This should be the easy. It being consolidated gives the city extra power over the parish that it wouldn't otherwise have. If the city wants to give that up that's fine by me.

The dumbest thing is, this is the worst possible move for the city of Baton Rouge.

I initially thought there was no way this was an actual quote. Sadly, I was mistaken.
