Hospital just called to tell us our bill to have our first child will be $4,200 out of pocket after insurance. The average American has less than $5,000 in savings. We can only assume Louisiana is below this average. So I have private insurance, get hammered by federal tax income, work over 40 hours a week to provide for my family, and have to pay $4,200 cash to have a child, but someone with Medicaid pays $0 and has the government front the bill?
Yeah, we had a kid last year and we have a $6500 total out of pocket for the r year and everything after that is covered 100%. Then we get our first few bills only to find out only certain cost codes go towards that total, which was less than half of them. So we paid 7k out of pocket total on top of the 1200/mo. For premiums.
It’s 100% a fricking scam, insurance and hospitals are both in on it. Docs know it is, too, but don’t want to say anything out of fear of losing their jobs.
We all need to rise up and tell these people to frick off with their theft schemes. Banks, hospitals, federal reserve, all of it.

Believe it or not you can call their billing department and negotiate a lower cost. We had an $8,000 bill after insurance when my wife was in and out of the hospital with some issues and the hospital told me they could accept about $4,200. Made my day.

Declare yourself illegal, or “undocumented“, and your bill will be covered 100%.

That's the great thing about health insurance. You get to pay all of this money, and if you ever have to use it, you get to pay even more money.

Yes. Because they know you will pay it. And they can't get money out of a turnip.

To make matters more stupid, they charged me $18 for FENTANYL, and $90 for PROPOFOL, and were trying to hit me for $654.50 for TYLENOL.
Nevermind that I could have given her oral Tylenol an hour before surgery for 15 cents.
Many times doctors don't seem to be aware of what is being charged. An example is imaging (X-Ray, CT, Ultrasound, etc.) Hermann charged me $1,300 for a procedure, which I later found for under $150. I told the doctor and she asked where I found the pricing I did, because she was shocked.
It pays to shop around. I know you can't in this case, because your wife has probably already fallen in love with the wallpaper in the delivery room or some shite, but you get the point.

Get a detailed bill break down, and start sending snail mail letters complaining.
Memorial Hermann attempted to charge me $654.50 for one gram of IV acetaminophen (Tylenol) THREE YEARS after my daughter got tubes put in. The price for the same amount of the same drug was $35.05, and I offered to pay them $60. It took about 18 months, but I sent a letter about every 60-90 days, with copies of all the previous letters, and they wrote it off.
They also "reversed" a "managed care discount" of $238.29 six weeks after surgery, which they never explained, and I never paid.
All in all, it was a little over four years from initial payment at the date of service to them giving up on trying to collect after I repeatedly disputed.
There's gonna be stuff on your bill that can be questioned.
There is zero reason to have to do that amount of work to keep from being bent over by health care providers. People of worth pay out their arse for health insurance and just get screwed over and over and over.

Double it for a C-Section FYI.

The hospitals should charge the amount that Medicaid covers to everyone
If Medicaid pays $4000 to cover a birth, then it should be $4000 for everyone
But hospitals and doctors wouldn’t make money doing they

How much do you think it should cost for the delivery of a child and an overnight hospital stay?

Honestly, it was mainly just cutting and pasting, updating dates, and sending the same stuff to them again, and again, and again.
But it was my money at risk, and I treated the situation that way. BTW, I also checked, and I paid $2,546 the morning of the surgery, so it's not like I just walked out with a $20 co pay and pretended surgery was magic.

Medicaid dictate what they will pay hospitals. For example an ER visit pays the hospital around $80 per patient. That’s why it’s so expensive for people with insurance.
