I'd learn the language of my local Native American tribe, or Cajun French first.

Neither are practical uses of your time for day-to-day speech. However, it could prove useful in a historical sense later on down the road when there are even fewer native speakers.

This topic reminds me of a scene from Charlie Wilson's War.

The Welsh are the hairiest northern European ethnic group, so unless that's your fetish, pick the Finns.

Finns are generally nice people.

Imagine, though, going into a bar full of gritty Welsh coal miners and being about to shoot the bull with them in their language. You'd get free ale all day.

Not sure about the specific Finnish-Welsh match up, but in general, Scandinavian chicks >> British chicks...

My granddad was born in Finland. As his health declined, all he would speak was Finnish. No one had a clue what he was saying, but it sounded cool.

Another cool thing about Finnish is it’s not an Indo-European language.

Developed separately, Finno-Urgic is the term I believe. Only a few languages in that family, Finnish, Estonian, and maybe a couple others.

I love to speak what little I know with my grandma and grandpa.

If you want a Nordic language, Learn Norwegian Bokmål. You'll get Danish for free, and you'll be able to understand a lot of Swedish and some Icelandic. You also have a head start on West Germanic languages like German & Dutch.

I have Finnish friends and the language is a nightmare, avoid unless you're a Finn or really want to live there. Even then, they will speak to you in English (if you can even get them to speak since they are anti-social ).

The best language to learn is the one YOU are most interested in though. What do YOU want to invest hundreds to thousands of hours in?

Negative fricks.

If you are going to go to the effort of learning something like a new language, I don’t see the benefit of choosing one that the native speaker can speak your language better than you could ever speak theirs. That is, a waste of time.

And as almost anyone that has learned a second language can attest, the only way you can truly learn to be conversant is to, you know, have conversations. You got to go to both of those places in order to do that.

Now this is cool! And something I find very interesting. Hungarian is another odd-ball language that's quite different from your more popular European languages.
