This is reminding me of Hurricane Michael, how it jumped like 3 categories in the matter of 24 hours and leveled Mexico Beach as a Cat5.

This. Lots more energy to work with. You can argue about why, but it’s pretty clear to me.

How's traffic headed West towards Houston from 30-50 miles north of Lake Charles today?

They'll prob reassess Laura in a few years and looking at the damage is does and retroactively categorize it as a 5

They may not need to, it keeps getting stronger. I believe they predicted it to be a Cat 3 at landfall, but do there doesn’t seem much in its way from growing stronger.

favorable strengthening waters

I remember Lili was a cat 3/4 that churned up cold water as it approached the coast despite favorable surface temps. Sucked the life out of it.

Looks like they will be on the western side so wind impacts and surge not as bad.

An eyewall replacement cycle is something that powerful (Cat 3 and above) hurricanes do where the eyewall is choked out and replaced by an outer eyewall that eventually contracts and becomes the dominant eyewall. During this process storms will weaken because the inner eyewall has the strongest winds but fades as it's feed of high moisture air is cut off.

Well basically.

It ends up looking like this on radar. You'll see a second bright band on radar encircle the inner core. On recon you'll see a second wind maximum. So it'll be high winds, lower winds, high winds again.

I'll be on here pretty much all day, so if I see signs of one happening, I'll say so.

I've been receiving texts from people that are observing this thread that they would like to see more scientific data.

Since slackster is a three fingered monkey, can you help with that and provide a bit of context behind it?

I’m not sure what you want from me. I can’t make it rain in Austin.

If the NHC forecast verifies, #Laura would the strongest hurricane on record for that part of NW Gulf Coast. Words fail me at a time like this- simply put, it would change the course of the landfall area much like Katrina did. Gut-wrenching LINK
