t is going to be interesting to see how they are treated by the Russians.
IMO too many cameras to do anything bad like the news reporter who protested live on TV. But time will tell

The Moskova underwent a refit from 1990 to 1998, and was recommissioned into the fleet in 2000.
It just sat at dock for most of the 90s. The Russians weren’t spending money on it.
And thats why it was so antiquated, beyond being simply an old ship, the Russians spent the money to keep it operational, but they didn’t invest in its weapon systems, or the underpinnings of the ship, like the fire suppression system.
It was not a good design to start with, which was probably part of the reason, it made sense to keep it, but not to improve it, but it was also deployed to the Black Sea, which was the least dangerous area of operations. The Ustinov did receive genuine upgrades, but it was assigned to the Northern Fleet, which was a more dangerous area of operations in the event of a war.

The Moskova was the 3rd most modern large ship (Destroyers/Cruisers/Battle Cruisers) in the Russian navy.
You’re just playing word games with yourself. It was a fossil.

In that situation you're right, but Hitler in Mein Kampf told you exactly what he was going to do. Personally they should have gone after Hitler when he took back the Rhineland as Churchill suggested since he was the only Brit who bothered read it.
I agree but this is Putin's third move against a neighboring country (Georgia in 2008, Ukraine in 2014, and Ukraine in 2022) which would correlate with Hitler's demand for the Sudentenland in 1938.

But I do think back to this point in history and consider I may be wrong here, but we've just been so betrayed by the state and oligarchy that at this point I almost at first glance just assume anything they tell me is true is likely the opposite.
1. You are wrong.
2. If you automatically believe the opposite of what the media tells you without thinking or doing any research into the matter then you just as dumb as the people who automatically believe whatever the media tells them without thinking or doing research into the matter.

Modern, Fossil, Flag Ship, Rusty Hulk...none of it matters, it's still a submarine and a major loss for the Russians.

It’s certainly a blow to their pride.

We don't know what they have either.
You are right that we (the general public) does not know what Russia has. However, we know what they don't have. We know that Russian does not even have enough of stealth fighters to make up one squadron. We know that Russia does not have a tank that can match the M1A2, Challenger 2, Leopard 2, or the LeClerc MBTs. Thanks to some Dutch grad students with nothing better to do than monitor the war, geo-locate, and identify most of the Russian and Ukrainian equipment lost in the war we know that Russia has 671 less tanks than it started the war with. Shall I go on?

While I'm confident we're more powerful than them, I don't want to frick around and find out from either NATO or Russia.
We are more powerful than them. All of NATOs MBTs are better than the T-90 and modernized T-72. The US Air Force alone has almost 500 stealth fighters. A war between NATO and Russia would be no contest. The only thing that would be uncertain would be how much damage the world sustains in the nuclear exchange.

Just like they have not invested in the targeting systems or armor for most of the tanks in their arsenal.
Whatever, the Black Sea fleet is largely confined to operating in areas adjacent to Russian control due to fear of losing more ships. Seems like the Russian Bear is being outed as a paper tiger.

in nearly every dimension of modern warfighting for that matter
1. Army getting beaten back
2. Navy can't guard a harbor let alone an entire Sea
3. Air Force getting poned by bad maintenance and handhelds
And most surprisingly to me is Cyber. They are getting skulldrug by nation states and independent orgs swamping their ability to fight beyond their own border.

It shouldn't be. As I said before, there are no lines when it comes to cyber warfare.

Yes but prior to war the Russians held a mythical cyber standing. It was almost a universal truth that the Russian "hacker" was omniscient and omnipresent so we better tread lightly.
Now we got Ukies posting TikTok Live

Nah. They aren't slouches, but they're not even close to being the best. China, several criminal APTs, etc. are all better.
And that's not even talking about our capabilities. If you had seen the shite I have about what we do in terms of cyber warfare, your mind would be blown. I thought I had a good handle on our capabilities prior to being read on to certain SAPs. I was very, very wrong.
ETA: And hell that was four years ago. No telling what the nerds at Meade can do now.

I think he’s referring to the expected cyber attacks promised against the west and the stuff that’s happening in Russia against critical infrastructure-again the shite that’s being thrown at Russia at this very moment is mind boggling, there are thousands of folks paid and unpaid wrecking shite in RU and UA. For me it’s the story aside from the military one is that of logistics and cyber. I’ve heard tales of both I just can’t quite fathom. America is still the best.

When you know you’re fate is predetermined you will fight literally for your life. I tip my hat to those guys. They held down several battalions of Russian troops that were badly needed in other areas and most importantly bought Ukraine time to refit and reposition it’s main forces. I hate it for them because it’s likely they will never be heard from again. They bled the Russians out for 3 months with only about 1200 soldiers fit for duty. The commander and his XO should receive whatever the highest recognition in Ukraine is as they will most likely be put on a show trial of some sort in Russia and then executed. Just like the RAF saved Britain in WWII vastly outnumbered this garrison may have very well saved their entire country and ensured its existence into the future. Their commander, Lt Col Denys Prokopenko, is only 30 years old but might have saved his country along with his XO Captain Svyatoslav Palamar and their men. Well done gentlemen and here’s hoping you make it home safe!

The discomforting fact is as the world stands today some Dutch kid using one thumb to plug a dike and the other hand to type on a laptop can have a major impact on a major conflict like Russia invading Ukraine.
