Russia recognized Ukraine as a fully independent nation for nearly 3 decades until they just decided Ukraine should no longer exist . There's no nuance here .
It’s bc Putin’s distorted view of history
Kiev and Ukraine were around before Moscow and Russia

Go back and look up what Reagan said about the Soviets. I am an old cold warrior that grew up knowing and seeing what the Soviets did to the people of Eastern Europe. Many parts of that area still suffer from the lingering effects of communism.
Having conversations with people who left old Soviet bloc countries and listen to their views on how bad communism is amazing
There is a reason they left and the low IQ Russians who believed it was great stayed around. The same ones that only get their information from state run TV and believe it’s the gospel.
I’ve met some great Russian people through the years. But they all seemed to be the type who were able to study abroad and travel the world to leave that communist mentality bubble Russia still has today. They are the ones now leaving. The brain drain is going to be pretty bad. While the low IQ ones stick around some more and breed more idiots.
The shitty Russians I have met are the ones who you see taking holiday in places like Spain and making the Brits (who are bad on their euro holidays) look like angels.
There is a reason why Russia essentially as a country is dying. Life expectancy and very bad and the value of life by the Neanderthals who live there doesn’t exist.
It’s why so many of those smoke show women want to leave. No eligible men to mate with.

Sounds like you and I are on the same page. I have no allegiance to Ukraine beyond wanting them to kick the shite out of Russia. Russia = evil.

The fleeing and outright murder of intellectuals in repressive regimes like soviet Russia is hard to quantify… but it has to have an effect decades later. The brainwashed potatoes left have no ability to think critically.
We saw the effects with Germany… many intellectuals and moderates fled Germany (mostly for the US) after the failed Revolutions of 1848… german culture was revered around the world. What was left was easily manipulated into a heavily militaristic society that set the stage for two world wars.

It is borderline delusional. I voted for Trump twice and would vote for him again. But this worshiping of him as some semi deity just comes across as cringeworthy.

If you get away from the cities Russia is very undeveloped and poor. The poverty there in the rural areas is amazing. There is a reason that most of Russia's soldiers don't come from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Putin wants it that way. I will give you an example, in the Russian state/republic of Saratov the population is about 85% ethnic Russian and 15% Kazak minority. But the soldiers from that region are 85% Kazak minority. They are so poor they are willing to sign those military contracts for what little they pay.

quote:Eh. Probably should wait until Russia is out of Ukraine. It would be embarrassing after spending billions & the war turns & Kyiv falls.
Numerous PMs have gone and we send the First Lady and a couple of fragile old senators after sending the most aid & equipment by far. This is a dumb look with all we’ve done and the benefits it’s shown. Just my opinion.

Not really dumb considering how Biden has been in his relative few public appearances.
There's a reason why we don't see him on TV much at all compared to past Presidents, and even when we do, it is tightly controlled and scripted.
That’s part of my point, just didn’t want to get too far down the Biden hating path, so I kept it general. On the face of it it just looks dumb that we’re doing everything we are with Ukraine and the other western powers are sending their leaders there and we’re sending the First Lady and speaker of the house, who’s not much better cognitively than Biden.

Right? Had he used “our rightful president” instead of “god emperor”, I don’t even know if I would have looked at his post history

If the estimate of 25K rus KIA is close to correct, how high does the number need to be before Putin is removed or rus withdraws?
Putin won’t stop. The sheer number of KIA highlights how poorly trained Russian ground forces truly are. I will admit, I thought the Russian Army would have shelled Ukraine into submission, but that wasn’t the case. With mass mobilization underway for the Russian Army, it highlights that obviously things aren’t going the way Putin planned. Russia will be sending even more poorly trained personnel to die for a lost cause. The curation of Coffins will not meet the demand for the high Russian body count. Hopefully the Russian Army has some semblance of a civil affairs mortuary unit, because they’re going to need it, as this war will rage on for many more years to come.

Key Takeaways
Russian forces destroyed several bridges to slow Ukrainian forces and may be conducting a limited withdrawal northeast of Kharkiv city in the face of the successful Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Ukrainian forces are making significant progress around Kharkiv and will likely advance to the Russian border in the coming days.
Ukrainian forces continued to repel Russian advances toward Barvinvoke and Russian forces have likely abandoned efforts to drive directly southeast toward Slovyansk. ISW cannot confirm claims of a Ukrainian counteroffensive toward Izyum at this time.
Russian forces claimed to capture Popasna on May 7 but remain largely stalled in eastern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian government confirmed the last remaining civilians trapped in the Azovstal plant evacuated on May 7, though the remaining Ukrainian defenders appear unlikely to surrender. ISW will likely be unable to report any discrete changes in control of terrain until Russian forces capture the plant as a whole due to the poor information environment in Mariupol.
By all indications, Russian forces will announce the creation of a Kherson People’s Republic or possibly forcibly annex Kherson Oblast in the coming weeks to cement its occupation administration and attempt to permanently strip these territories from Ukraine.
Russian forces continued to target Odesa with cruise missile strikes and conduct false-flag attacks in Transnistria over the past several days.

Ukrainian sources reported further Russian preparations for a Victory Day celebration in Mariupol, including increased security. The Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported on May 7 that Russian commanders are removing officers from combat, including reportedly the command staff of the 71st Motor Rifle Regiment, to protect Kremlin officials and propagandists in Mariupol.[12] The GUR also claimed to have intercepted communications between Russian servicemen complaining of the stupidity of their commanders and the humiliation of being withdrawn for guard duty, but ISW cannot verify either of these claims. Advisor to the Mayor of Mariupol Petro Andryushchenko separately claimed on May 7 that the Russian occupation forces in Mariupol are distributing ribbons and invitations for a May 9 parade in the city center and Primorsky Park.[13] Andryushchenko further reported Mariupol residents are being forced to clear bodies and rubble in order to receive food from Russian forces.[14]

I find myself wondering if the Ukrainians will start annexing parts of Russian territory. Depending on the location of roads and railways that support the Russian troops that might be logical.
