With the loss of Anti Air Naval assets the Russians tried to bring in ground based SAM systems; Ukraine denies Russia that ability. This means the coast closest to Moldova would be off-limits to any type of amphibious assault as Russia can not provide an anti air umbrella and their ships would be in range of Anti Ship Missiles.
It will be interesting to see if Ukraine tries to man the island and setup anti ship missiles on it, I do not believe they will as the island is exposed to attack.

So what do we think about the Ukranian Airforce showing up again? Are theses the "new" planes which were offered, but then apparently reneged? Did Ukraine just hide and save their planes in initial assault figuring that RUS wouldn't gain air superiority?

I think they hid them until they got better battlefield odds than the first 2 months of the war gave them.

Ukrainian forces are making significant progress around Kharkiv and will likely advance to the Russian border in the coming days.
Ukrainian forces continued to repel Russian advances toward Barvinvoke and Russian forces have likely abandoned efforts to drive directly southeast toward Slovyansk. ISW cannot confirm claims of a Ukrainian counteroffensive toward Izyum at this time.
Russian forces claimed to capture Popasna on May 7 but remain largely stalled in eastern Ukraine.
It is amazing how the Putin lovers were hailing the potential capture of Papasna (a town of less than 20,000), but ignoring the fact that Russian forces have been driven out artillery range of Kharkiv (Ukraine's 2nd largest city) and are steadily being driven back to the Ukrainian and Russian border.

There was no immediate response from Ukraine, but late Saturday Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said heavy fighting for the town continues.
"A battle for Popasna is ongoing," Arestovych said in a video on social media.
"Russian propagandists have joyfully reported that they have already taken it, but this is not quite how it is. This is their 117th 'capture of Popasna' claim only this week."
IDK if Russia or controls the small town of Popasna or there is still a fight for the town or not. However, that reply from Ukraine is gold baby.

Have you looked at a map? Russia is encircling the Ukraine Troops in the south. Propasana is just south of Kharkiv. This will then allow Russia to attack Kharkiv from the south now as well...

There is a map a few replies up from here. Russian forces were far more close to encircling Kharkiv from the South back in late April then they are now, regardless of who holds Propasna.

I see, So when does Ukraine wrap this thing up?

Don’t you need to be asking when will Russia wrap this up?

So many questions starting with have YOU seen a map? Popasna is 244 km away from Kharkiv. This is just a strange hill to plant your flag on when the Russians have had more success closer than a town 244km away such as Izyum (a town you'd have to drive through to get to Kharkiv).
So when does Russia wrap this whole thing up?

The map right above shows Popasna. Popasna is a long ways from Kharkiv and it’s capture does not appear anywhere close to equalling a Russian pincer from the south.

Are you ignorant of the situation in Ukraine or are you just retarded? You do realize that Popasna has been contested ground for at least the past two weeks, don't you? Also you do know how far it is from Popasna to Kharkiv? It is over 240 km away from Kharkiv.
This is a map of the situation 2 weeks ago.
This is a map of the situation today.
As you can see (unless you are blind or retarded) Russian forces have made very little progress on the Donbas front and have been driven away from the northern approaches to Kharkiv. They have also been pushed back on the eastern and southern approaches to Kharkiv. Russia gaining control of Popasna does not affect Kharkiv at all. The only reason anyone is talking about Popasna is because Russian propaganda is making the capture of this small town seem like it is the biggest military achievement since the fall of Berlin.

Ukraine is getting ready to kick Russia's teeth in. Tomorrow May 9th, I expect them to launch a counterattack on the weak spot in the Russian Flank between Izium and Kharkiv. They will move to cut off the supply lines into the Izium area. If they can do that, game over for Russia, it is only moving backward from there.
An attack launched tomorrow will be highly symbolic.

They haven't capture Mariupol yet and it took them weeks to capture Popsana. I'm not sure they can take anything else at this point.
Posted on 5/8/22 at 7:23 pm to WeeWee
Yes, and the more Russia continues to advance in the south the harder it will be for Ukraine...
Also, Ukraine seems willing to let their troops be encircled in the south?

Hyperbole much?

Where has Russia had any substantial advance in the south? Have they moved more than 10-20km from where the front lines were before this "Russian offensive" in the south? What major gains have they made in the south?

Define what you call major?
As I said, they are encircling UA troops. It was a big hurdle was crossing the Donets as Ukraine had strategically blown up bridges creating bottle necks for troop advancement.
It is evident Russia is making ground in Southern Donbas region and with this encirclement, its just a matter of time like it was for Mariupol.
I've put no timelines on this conflict like the media has. This is likely to last years. However, unless Ukraine receives massive amounts of not just aid, but troops, it will be death by 1000 cuts.
