And Gorby himself said that no promises made about NATO other than the US would not build a base in East Germany.

What great republican doesn't love amnesty for millions of illegals or California's therapeutic abortion law that war on drugs thing has really been going pretty well, but I think we should ignore those laws so we can get weapons for Iran.

Unreal. As much as I've hated Jake Sullivan, it's clear that many of his actions simply reflect the weakness of Joe Biden:

There's an alternate history where Ukraine is already in possession of all of its pre-2022 territory -- all it required was presidential resolve.

Without our funding and technology provided in the 1990's and into the 2000's, Russia would be broke and in pieces. Yes, that is what happened.

Maybe it should have happened. The US playing the charitable character in geopolitics just delayed why so many people in this thread are so scared of Russia. Instead of stepping on the neck of a threat to the free world, we just gave them another chance, which led directly to this thread on Tigerdroppings.

I agree. Biden was doing whatever Sullivan recommended to him. This just Sullivan covering his butt by throwing the guy whose career is over under the bus.

ISW Update Nov 26th

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Russian officials continue to demonstrate that the Kremlin aims to seize more territory in Ukraine than it currently occupies and is unwilling to accept compromises or engage in good faith negotiations, no matter who mediates such talks.

The Russian military's rate of advance since Fall 2024 has notably increased recently compared to its rate of advance in 2023 and the rest of 2024, but recent Western media reports comparing recent Russian gains to those at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion continue to mischaracterize the gradual and tactical nature of Russia's recent advances.

US National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby confirmed Ukraine's usage of US-provided ATACMS against Russia amid official Russian confirmation of recent Ukrainian ATACMS strikes.

Russian forces launched a record number of drones against Ukraine on the night of November 25 to 26 as Russia continue to increase their use of decoy drones in long-range strike packages targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure in order to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense systems.

Russian state media reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) replaced former Russian Southern Military District (SMD) and Southern Grouping of Forces commander Colonel General Gennady Anashkin with Eastern Military District (EMD) acting commander Lieutenant General Alexander Sanchik.

Russian forces continue to execute Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) amid a surge of recent Russian war crimes.

The Russian State Duma is preparing the legal mechanisms to remove the Taliban from the Russian government’s official list of banned terrorist organizations.

Ukrainian forces recently regained lost positions near Kreminna, and Russian forces recently advanced near Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.

A Russian milblogger complained on November 25 that Russian forces often operate artillery without coordinating between different Russian elements, highlighting significant communications issues between armored vehicle and infantry units.

Russian authorities continue to incentivize service in Ukraine through one-time payment offers, likely in order to avoid conducting another partial involuntary reserve callup.

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
27 November 2024
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

Russian independent Astra news reported on 14 November 2024 that dozens of injured Russian soldiers rioted in Novosibirsk, south central Russia, due to inadequate medical care. The soldiers, from the 41st Combined Arms Army, Central Military District, reportedly complained of mistreatment by their unit commander and did not want to return to the frontlines without adequate medical treatment. They are said to have smashed windows and damaged the barracks, with 10 fleeing the compound.

Shortages of armoured vehicles and the persistent Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle threat result in significant delays to evacuation of wounded Russian soldiers. This almost certainly increases the likelihood of more serious injuries and higher rates of mortality for those who are eventually evacuated through the medical system.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russia has suffered over 700,000 casualties since February 2022, of which approximately 500,000 Russian service personnel were wounded. It is almost certain this scale of casualties continues to strain the Russian Military Medical System at all levels of medical care, causing significant logistic problems and resulting in a shortage of medical personnel. These problems will likely persist for at least the next three months.

Between 60,000 and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in war with Russia – The Economist

Iryna Balachuk — Wednesday, 27 November 2024, 12:47

Ukraine may have lost between 60,000 and 100,000 soldiers killed over nearly three years of Russia's full-scale invasion, with around 400,000 soldiers likely to have been seriously wounded.

Source: The Economist, citing data from Western intelligence agencies, defence officials, open sources and the UALosses website

Details: Journalists highlight that all the data and reports mentioned are difficult to independently verify. Moreover, these figures may not always account for soldiers who are missing in action or those who are presumed dead, adding uncertainty to the reported casualty numbers.

Quote: "Nevertheless, they offer an approximation of the death toll. They suggest that at least 60,000-100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died so far. Perhaps a further 400,000 are too injured to fight on. These numbers do not include civilian deaths, on which there is strikingly little data. Many tens of thousands of civilians are believed to have been killed."

You seem to presume that was ever a primary US/UK goal. If it was, where was the plan? Where was the definition of victory? There was none.

Why?

Because the goal was to "Press Putin." Nothing more, nothing less. If Ukraine recovered some territory in the process and embarrassed Putin in the process, all the better.

It is amazing how opaque the obscene proxy component is to folks in this thread.
