Key Takeaways:

Russian authorities claimed to have arrested the four attackers and seven others involved in the March 22 “Crocus City Hall” concert venue attack, which Russian authorities reported killed at least 133 civilians.

ISW assesses that the Islamic State (IS) is very likely responsible for the Crocus City Hall attack.

The Kremlin nevertheless and without evidence quickly attempted to tie Ukrainian actors to the Crocus City Hall attack but has yet to formally accuse Ukraine of involvement in the attack.

Russian ultranationalists responded to the attack by reiterating typically xenophobic calls for anti-migrant policies, reflecting the growing tension in Russian society over the mistreatment of migrants and the impacts migrant disenfranchisement could have on expanding a viable recruitment base in Russia for Salafi-Jihadi groups.

Russian sources accused Ukrainian actors of reportedly conducting a successful drone strike against a Russian oil refinery in Samara Oblast on the night of March 22 to 23.

Russia is reportedly delaying the delivery of two S-400 air defense systems to India, likely due to limitations in Russia’s production of S-400 systems, an increased need for air defense systems to protect cities and strategic enterprises in Russia from Ukrainian drone strikes, and a reported souring of Russian relations with India.

Russian forces made confirmed advances near Avdiivka and Donetsk City and in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on March 23 that will release individuals from criminal liability if they are called up for mobilization or sign military service contracts.

I believe there is an airfield in Stryi. Maybe that's where the Storm Shadows are being launched out of

Ukrainian StratCom reports that the Ropucha Class landing ships “Yamal” and “Azov” have been struck last night.

There's no video or photos yet.

Why is this surprising?

Russia destroyed HIMARS, and Patriot, and Abrams, before they ever arrived on the battlefield. Why wouldn't they do the same with F-16

Of note, whomever was saying that the gloves were coming off that doesn’t appear to be the case this morning. Russia is still firing from inside Russian airspace. I don't think they're going to do anything drastic or emotional, at least not immediately.

Some one was saying that Russia was going to start dropping the new heavy bombs on Kyiv as a decapitation strike . I don’t remember if it was in this thread or the political board though.

They posted a blurry video of a plane crashing last week and claimed it was an F16.

Ukrainian StratCom reports that the Ropucha Class landing ships “Yamal” and “Azov” have been struck last night.

Officially confirmed.

In Sevastopol, the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully hit the large landing ships Yamal and Azov, a communications center and several infrastructure facilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the General Staff reported.

OSINTtechnical reports that at least three Storm Shadow missiles hit the main communications center of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

According to the OSINTtechnical project, military units of missile gunners and FSB are also located there.

Last night, the most massive attack "for the entire time of the SMO" was carried out on Sevastopol, official Russian channels wrote.

According to the occupation authorities of the peninsula, allegedly "the air defense system shot down several dozen missiles, including British Storm Shadow missiles, on their approach to the city."

The occupiers confirm that the main communications center of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was the target of the attack.

According to Russian media, 34 military personnel were killed, 40 wounded, and three Su-27 airplanes were damaged at the Belbek airfield.

The Storm Shadows are being launched from Migs and SUs which don’t have the range to reach a launching point for western cruise missiles to hit Sevastapol. They are either hitting airbases being prepared for F16s, or more likely attacking targets in which they can launch their missiles over Belarus and routing them through Polish airspace to limit the amount of time that Ukrainian air defense has to intercept the missiles. Which makes me wonder how long it will be before Poland starts intercepting the missiles in Polish airspace? Poland has every right to intercept missiles or drones that violate its airspace and Russia ain’t stupid enough to retaliate against them.

Not a good night for the red Air Force either.

They sure seem to be losing a lot of expensive planes. I noted somewhere back the number of su34's lost was pretty high. Russia has a fair amount of planes and pilots but those are not cheap losses.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 24 March 2024

On 18 March 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the construction of a railway line from Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia through the Russian temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to Crimea. According to Putin, the new line will ultimately reach Sevastopol in southern Crimea and provide redundancy for the Kerch bridge. Although Putin claimed the first completed section restores access to Berdyansk, the pre-existing rail connection used to complete this journey passes through territory vulnerable to interdiction by Ukrainian long-range precision strike systems.

The new railway line, south of Donetsk, between Kolosky and Kamianka, is nearly 60km in length and took eight months to build. It is almost certainly one of the largest infrastructure projects Russia has carried out in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and re-establishes the rail connection denied by the fighting outside of Donetsk.

It is likely one of the immediate objectives of the new line will be to support Russian activity in Mariupol. The port city, destroyed by Russia in 2022, contains the Azovstal steel works and other heavy industry facilities that, although currently severely damaged, Russia may seek to repair and exploit in the future.

I still want to see some evidence, both at the airfield and at the harbor. I saw videos of explosions, but I haven't seen what they hit or the damage inflicted.

Ukraine hits oil depot in occupied Crimea
24.03.2024 14:23

An oil depot near the settlement of Gvardiyske in temporarily occupied Crimea’s Simferopol district was reportedly attacked by Ukrainian drones as explosions were heard in the area.

That’s according to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.

On the morning of Sunday, March 24, as Russian missiles were attacking Ukraine, about 20 explosions rang out in Crimea. The strikes targeted an oil depot near the village of Gvardiyske.

"It is noted that after a series of explosions at an oil depot captured by the occupiers near Gvardiyske, Simferopol district, a fire broke out and smoke plumes were visible from afar. According to information from open sources, the site was attacked by drones," the Ministry of Energy noted.

Also, the Ministry of Energy added, "there is an assumption that the Gvardiyske-based military garrison was also hit. After that, an evacuation of residents began from the residential neighborhood near the oil depot."

Poland could have shot down a Russian missile if it had flown further - Defense Ministry

It is noted that the Russian missile stayed in Polish airspace for 39 seconds. It flew at an altitude of 400 meters and at a speed of 800 km/h. The missile flew 1.5-2 km deep into Poland. During the incident, four F-16 fighters - two Polish and two American fighters - flew into the air.

"The effectors, that is, the missiles that the pilots have on board, could have shot down the object if it had gone deeper and was a threat," said Mieczyslaw Bieniek, an adviser to the Polish Defense Minister.

"Russia has quite a few large landing ships, because this is probably the sixth ship [hit]. If they are not damaged but destroyed, it is also a very powerful blow to logistics. Because these ships can transport either a battalion (300 soldiers) or armored vehicles. But usually, Russia employs them to transport shells, Shaheds, and ammunition; these ships are mostly used for ammunition. This is a very powerful blow to Russian logistics."
