From an identity perspective, can someone more knowledgeable on Turkey enlighten their gain from an identity standpoint? Obvious economic benefit, but identity seems very important here. I thought there was some deal of pride is being that bridge between Europe and Asia and playing the two sides off the other?

It’s just a power move on Turkey’s part in my opinion.

For sure, but the indication is they actually want to be an EU member and it doesn’t feel like it fits from an identity perspective, to me at least.

I guess a supplemental question would then be if they would join the currency union and it’s impact on them. Given their recent monetary policy that feels like a “no”

They have wanted to be an EU member forever, but the EU doesn't want a member who worked with ISIS to fund them through oil smuggling. Erdogan's own brother was in charge of that operation.

The EU doesn't want someone who uses Syrian refugees as a weapon, to dump them in countries that oppose him.

These are only the very first two examples that come to mind. The Islamicist nature of the Erdogan regime is a problem.

If Erdogan had lost the election to Kilicdaroglu, then maybe the EU would actually consider this.

Nope. Not even close. Russia is on the brink of collapse and the next three months will bear this out.

Those are why I said it would be a terrible idea for Europe in addition to giving them even more power for their selfish grandstanding.

Just thought there was much more of an identity on their part of being Eurasian vs European or Asian. Joining the EU seems like it would erode that down to becoming “European”

Care to list which other countries we have pledged to help are currently being invaded by a foreign power?

You claimed more than one yesterday. Then when pressed you abandoned the thread. What happened?

Per a WSJ update a few minutes ago Ergodan has just agreed to admit Sweden to NATO.

Well, they were the original "Sick man of Europe".

I understand what you're getting at, but they've held an important relationship with "Western Europe" for a long time.

Does hard, frozen ground have any impact on how well land mines work?

Will these things go boom just as readily in January when there is potentially a layer of ice on and a few inches down into the soil? I assume yes but am genuinely curious.

The short answer is frozen ground alone makes almost no difference, ice makes detonator fuzes less likely to work but it is more of an issue with AP (anti-personnel) than it is with AT (anti-tank) mines.

No, that was only Erdogan's game. Turkey would have been far better off if Erdogan never ascended to power.

The identity issues don't really matter. Turkey joining would piss off the right-wing in Europe more than it affect Turkish issues with identity.
