Reminder that Russia's invasion continues to adversely affect the whole region.

Blackouts in Moldova

More than half of Moldova was also left without electricity, deputy prime minister Andrei Spinu wrote on Twitter. He said the attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has caused a "massive blackout" across Moldova.

Within a few hours power was restored in much of the capital, Chisinau, where a third of the Moldovan population lives.

Moldova also experienced widespread power cuts as a result of strikes on Ukraine on 15 November, Mr Spinu said. Mobile networks were also badly affected.

Energy policy analyst Sergiu Tofilat said that because Moldova and Ukraine were connected to the European grid in March, one of the connection points on the power line between Moldova and neighbouring Romania shut down automatically if Ukraine was hit to protect the system: "We reconnect once Ukraine has assessed the damage."

In response to the outages, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said Russia had "left Moldova in the dark".

"Russia's war in Ukraine kills people, destroys residential blocks and energy infrastructure with missiles..." she wrote on Facebook. "But the electricity supply can be restored. We will solve the technical problems and we will have light again. All state institutions are working in this direction."

Russia launches 70 missiles on Ukraine on 23 November, Ukraine’s air defence shots down 51

Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defence systems have shot down 51 out of 70 missiles and five kamikaze drones that Russia launched on Ukraine on 23 November.

Intercepting 73% of the missiles and drones launched at Ukraine is pretty good defense. Imagine how much better the aid defense will be once the majority of the promised western SAMs arrive, or better yet imagine how much better the air defense would be if the NASAMs had arrived in September like the Biden administration originally promised.

I don't think that's the case. The NASAMS had to be built; we didn't have one sitting around to spare. The situation was similar for the German IRIS-T system. They were delivered as soon as they were built. Now, maybe we could've paid for the factory workers to work some overtime -- I don't know about that.

But the old HAWK systems that we're dragging out of storage and giving to Ukraine now? Yeah, we coulda given them a long time ago.

The Russian military conducted another set of massive, coordinated missile strikes on Ukrainian critical infrastructure in a misguided attempt to degrade the Ukrainian will to fight.

Key Takeaways

The Russian military conducted another set of massive, coordinated missile strikes on Ukrainian critical infrastructure.

Russian politicians continue to promote openly genocidal rhetoric against Ukraine.

The Kremlin continues to pursue its maximalist goals and is likely issuing vague statements about its intent to mislead Western Countries into pressuring Ukraine into negotiations.

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations in the directions of Kreminna and Svatove.

Russian forces continued offensive operations around Bakhmut and Avdiivka.

Russian forces continued defensive operations on the east (left) bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.

The Kremlin is continuing crypto-mobilization efforts at the expense of other Russian security services.

Russian forces and occupation officials continued to forcibly relocate residents and confiscate their property.

This is one of the crazier clips from Russian TV I have seen so far. Openly admitting war crimes and suggesting they continue, and that is just the start of the insanity.

Victor Olevish (light blue jacket/purple shirt) as always is a glimmer of sanity.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE 24 November 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

In the last two weeks, Russia has likely redeployed major elements of the VDV (airborne forces) to the Donetsk and Luhansk fronts in the Donbas. From September to October, most of the severely weakened VDV units were dedicated to the defence of Russian-held territory west of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.

Some VDV units have likely been reinforced with mobilised reservists. Although these poorly trained personnel will dilute VDV's supposedly elite capability, Russia will likely still allocate these units to sectors deemed especially important.

Potential operational tasks for the VDV include supporting the defence of the Kremina-Svatove area in Luhansk Oblast or reinforcing offensive operations against the Donetsk Oblast town of Bakhmut.

BREAKING: Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban backs Sweden and Finland's accession to NATO

The Hungarian parliament probably won't ratify this until January, but it'll follow Orban's lead.

This will leave only Turkey to ratify.

Norway sends another SPG and winter gear.

LINK

quote:

The cargo contains around 55,000 bandages and individual packages. In addition, 30,000 field rations and 55,000 articles of winter clothing are sent.

The clothes have either been phased out by the Armed Forces, or bought new.

- In total, we donate NOK 250 million worth of winter clothing. We are trying to get this out as quickly as possible. The cold season is coming quickly, says Gram.

Also included on this trip to Ukraine is an M109 artillery vehicle.

So far, Norway has donated 22 of these for use in the war against Russia.

Also 20,000 unique spare parts for the M109 are packed and sent on this donation.

From what my sauce(s) in the US and Ukrainian militaries tell me that you are wrong. The USA placed an order for NASAMs earlier this year to replace ones we had agreed to give Ukraine. The USA had extra NASAMs it could spare until the new ones were produced. However, in mid July after Severodonetsk fell and the Russians started saber rattling after we gave the Ukrainians HIMARs the Biden administration delayed deploying the NASAMs and completely abandoned the plans for equipping the Ukrainians with fighter jets recently retired USMC F18s and cobra attack helicopters. The mid level beuracrats in the Biden administration were having second thoughts about if Ukraine could win and was worried about provoking Russia. After the Ukrainians successful counteroffensives and the Russians started its new missile swarm tactics they decided that Ukraine could win and realized they needed to get on it ASAP. According to my sauce(s) the bearocrats hesitation delayed the arrival of the NASAMS by 2.5 months.

The requested any and every type of SAM system available back in March. The powers that be thought it would be better to try and find cold war era ussr systems to equip the Ukrainian with since the Ukrainians knew how to use the systems instead of training the Ukrainians on cold war era NATO SAM systems. My sauce(s) in Ukraine tell me that the sources of USSR systems in NATO countries started drying up in mid summer. The USA had to start looking elsewhere for SAMs and in late August the USA had reached a deal to buy old SAM systems from Egypt and India. Unfortunate, Russia discovered the deal and India and Egypt backed out in early October. It was only then that the USA and NATO realized that they were going to have to resort to Cold War era NATO systems in addition to USSR systems. I understand this rationale and I am not complaining about it since it was just bad luck that someone in the Egyptian military (per my sauce in Ukrainian intelligence) who was involved in the deal was also on the Russians payroll.

Which one? My former roommate was still alive as of last week. He is still on the Svatove front and the tanks are just waiting on the ground to freeze up enough to support them. One of the fighter pilots who I spent hours drinking with on the train from Poland to Kharkiv got shot down in September. He survived and was recovered by Ukrainian SAR in less than an hour after ejecting but he suffered major burns and shrapnel wounds and broke his ankle on landing. The shrapnel wounds got infected and he had to have his right leg amputated just below the knee. 2 of the Ukrainian officers who I met when I was over there this summer have died in the fighting on the Donetsk front recently.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE
25 November 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

Two months after President Putin announced a partial mobilisation', common themes are emerging in the experience of mobilised Russian reservists. Their deployment is often characterised by confusion over eligibility for service, inadequate training and personal equipment, and commitment to highly attritional combat missions.

Most - though not all - mobilised reservists have previously served and numerous examples suggest that reservists are highly likely not having their medical status adequately reviewed and many are being compelled to serve with serious, chronic health conditions.

Mobilised reservists have highly likely experienced particularly heavy casualties after being committed to dig ambitious trench systems while under artillery fire around the Luhansk Oblast town of Svatove. In Donetsk Oblast, reservists have been killed in large numbers in frontal assaults into well-established Ukrainian defensive zones around the town of Bakhmut. The Kremlin will likely be concerned that an increasing number of reservists' families are prepared to risk arrest by protesting against the conditions their relatives are serving under.

This is from an article on Fox this morning. Says other cities in danger also. So is this Russia's plan and why they have been pulling forces back? Freeze and starve out Ukraine?

That certainly makes sense. Here's some related news from today on that issue:

quote:

The United States once again offered Greece to transfer its S-300 and Tor-M1 air defense systems to Ukraine, in return promising Greece to begin deliveries of American-made anti-aircraft systems.

Greece was not keen on transfering them back in June.

Greece currently operates 25 Tor-M1 (SA-15 Gauntlet) systems and at least 8 batteries of the S-300PMU1 (SA-20 Gargoyle).

Here's a link to a story of Greece's main opposition party trashing the proposed deal: LINK. Greece fears Turkish aggression in the Aegean.

i watch most of the "Speak the Truth - Ukraine" videos on Youtube.

One thing Rob notes and is immediately obvious is how disheveled the Russian army is. Even on some sort of base - not the front lines - the uniforms don't match, the arms are mixed (if present at all), and the men out of shape.

Definitely not professional as one would ahve expected of a Great Power...

They don't even have gloves. Watch this recent video: LINK

The Russian troops are so numb and disoriented from hypothermia that they can't even react to a grenade going off right next to them in their trench.

And it's still November. I think that thousands of Russian soldiers will freeze to death this winter.
