[CNN] US security assistance to Ukraine has arrived within "last couple of days," senior defense official says

quote:

US security assistance to Ukraine has arrived “within the last couple of days,” a senior defense official said Saturday, indicating that US President Joe Biden's administration has continued to send in aid even after Russia launched its invasion.

“We have continued to flow assistance to the Ukrainians, even since the airspace has become disputed and contested, and we’re going to continue to look for additional venues to do that,” the official said on a call with reporters.
Late Friday night, the US approved another $350 million in security assistance to Ukraine. In a statement Saturday morning, the State Department announced that it would include “lethal defensive assistance” that would help Ukraine deal with armored, airborne and other threats.

Though the senior defense official would not detail the exact types of equipment beyond Javelin anti-armor missiles, the US has provided Stinger anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine in the last few weeks.

The official would not say how the assistance would arrive in Ukraine.

Since Ukraine’s airspace is contested, the US has not flown any aircraft into or over Ukraine. But countries like Poland have openly stated that they have sent ammunition into Ukraine with ground convoys, one of the only viable options given the current situation.

“I think you'd have to assume that ground routes would certainly be on the list of options that we would consider,” the defense official said without providing further details.

No, if we cut them off from SWIFT, it could cause an international movement to move away from the dollar as an international currency. If that happens, the dollar essentially tanks and we're all eating rice and beans.

Long-term, possibly, but in the short-term it would wreck Russia. There's no immediate replacement for SWIFT, and blocking access to it, especially if sanctions fall on Russia's central bank, would be cataclysmic for Russia itself.

It hasn't historically been great, but we're pushing them to a stronger alliance everyday.

China and Russia is the perfect match made in hell. Dirtball scabs constantly looking to stab one another in the back with a smile to their face. It does China no good to be in an adversarial relationship with its largest trade partner, the US. Let us hope the US divests from China’s high end tech manufacturing and moves that shite out of APAC.

[BBC News] Footage is revealing Russian losses

quote:

Across tweets, TikToks and Facebook posts there is a growing body of evidence of the scale of setbacks suffered by the Russian army.

Prisoners are interrogated, some dazed from the shock of capture and death of comrades, mumbling that they never knew they were being sent to Ukraine. One young Russian sits with his head in his hands, hiding his face as local people shout abuse about President Putin. Another, asked if he has a message for his family, says, “I love you.”

Along with the growing number of videos of prisoners there is grislier stuff of charred corpses in burnt out vehicles. The toll of dead and captured is unclear but UK defence ministry estimates of hundreds of fatalities are likely to be true, particularly if reports about two Russian transport aircraft being shot down in the early hours of Saturday are confirmed. There could be many tens of prisoners, given the videos circulating.

The revelation of these losses back home could have serious consequences for Putin. There is a long legacy of protest by soldiers’ mothers, for example during the Afghan and Chechen wars. Hence reports that Russia began restricting access to Twitter and Facebook, perhaps to slow the spread of images and testimony.

Excuse me what?

When Germany sells arms to another country they have included in that sales agreement a list of countries that the purchaser cannot resale the weapons to. Germany has temporarily lifted that clause to allow for the sale or transfer of those weapons to Ukraine.

I don't think Russia, China, and Iran would be enough.

Their issue also would be a currency to replace the USD, b/c none of the 3 currently have that. China has intentionally deflated its currency to the point where it's unstable, and Russia has accomplished this negligently. Nobody is going to trade in whatever the frick Iran uses, for obvious reasons.

China's currency is now regarded as one of the reserve currencies. They have ample reason to retain interest in the current financial system. Iran desperately wants back into the SWIFT system, as they are the only central bank which has lost its access.

The USD still has an amazing number of transactions completed in it. Even if the US is no longer hegemonic, the dollar will be a reserve currency for a long time, just like the pound is.

I’m seeing reports that the Ukrainian Snake Island garrison actually accepted Russian overtures to surrender. None of them were killed.

Dollar dominance is ending, partly for economic reasons, but we’re accelerating the process. The dollar is no longer a reliable currency for some people. Large countries will hedge their bets, and use other currencies.

This is going to make us poorer.
