My niece's are in school in the Katy ISD and there is one HUGE difference...the size of the Special Education population. In Louisiana, a LARGE portion of the funding goes to a SMALL segment of the population. In short, if you are comparing spending per student (non special education), then Louisiana probably spends 25-33% less per student depending upon the region. It is killing our education system in the state imo.

Weird.

Everyone here keeps telling me that California is the biggest cesspool shithole state that needs to fall off into the ocean.

I would never defend this administration but this is simply not true. Define ok

Mainstreaming also has hurt the traditional classroom. You have everything from AP to special ed in one classroom. It really bogs things down.

$70 oil is ok, it's actually a little better than ok. $100 plus oil is artificially high and not realistic. I say this as a man who makes a living in the oil field .

Issue with your statement is that your trying to compare Louisiana to Texas. Louisiana will never beat Texas in every category except cultcha and obesit

Almost every LA legislature has compared Louisiana at one point to Houston from jobs to education to state income taxes, property taxes, etc..

Since I joined TD many years ago, many of those posters have moved to TX, including myself.

Seems like 1/2 of Houston is from Louisiana

Stop under-pricing our resources, stop the corporate welfare especially to industries that would in La without it; build infrastructure.

With Dumb Bel Edwards leading the way what do you expect? During a budget crisis this ignoramus raises taxes and cuts education. High taxes and an ignorant workforce keeps businesses away, thus stifling our economy. But don't cut any benefits like welfare and medicaid, gotta keep them democrat voters on the plantation to vote this corrupt trash back into office.

Lol. The parents that are involved send their kids to private schools or move somewhere close to a decent public school.
The leftovers don’t give a frick about their kids or the outcome. School is a sitting service for them not much else.
You can’t overcome that. Thus the cancer analogies- a little group of cells destroys the whole body

Louisiana was ranked #1 or teens or twenties when Jindal was in charge? Or the past 5 governors? It doesn't matter what party the governor represents, the results will always be the same.

I’ll never understand this!
We are 25th in population at about 4.6 million.

We Provide 25% of the seafood consumed in the US.

We have the 5th most popular tourist destination in the US in New Orleans.

We have 7.9 million acres of farm land and are the number two producers of sugar cane and sweet potatoes and number three producer of rice in the US.

We are top 5 in natural gas production and we have the the Henry Hub, so natural gas distribution and price is basically controlled in this state.

One-fifth of all the refineries in the US are in Louisiana.

The Port of South Louisiana, located on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is the largest volume shipping port in the Western Hemisphere and 4th largest in the world, as well as the largest bulk cargo port in the world.

We have the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the only deep water port in the country.

How is this state so poor
What are we doing wrong?

Generations of electing a person by race, family name, or who tells the best stories/jokes. They sell the state out and you guys pat them on the back and vote for them again. The state constitution only allows for cuts to be made in health and education. The two areas that would pay the most dividends. I'm stopping there cause this could go on all day.

Is this where we blame the state's 100 years of woe on a Democratic governor who has been in office for two years?

I think people vastly overestimate how large the oilfield business is in Louisiana

The fact that the health of the overall economy is so dependent on the oil field isn't a good thing

Particularly when you consider that a lot of LA's oilfield economy relies on supporting gulf drilling activities.

There are quite a few of us who have worked offshore that didn't reside in LA. I had to make a 9 hour drive to get to the heliport but it beats living in LA.

This. The only addition is a large and fast growing population of people who do not care about their kids or other people at all. Which is the root cause of our education woes.
