It was 3 girls on the team it looks like. My guess is the weather was fine by Kobe’s home so they show up 60 minutes before the game for a 20 minute flight, that would have been like a 2 hour drive. Well, weather turns to shite in between locations and Kobe pushes the pilot to get there so they don’t miss the game as it’s too late to drive.

Luckily the pipeline we were looking at was pretty close to the Bucee's. We were at the point that the pilot was gonna land that bird anywhere because that poor inspector was about to drop one in the backseat.

I hate flying in helicopters too.

Be real. this wasn't some Random dude. You think a man worth 500 million isn't going to have one of the best of the best private pilots.

Seeing as he was flying every day in a 29 year old chopper that had several previous owners, an $11 million craft new that he paid a mere $500k for, I sort of question it.

Also a 30-year-old helicopter. I wonder if it had the best radar/software technology. He should've known the topography and known how low he could be.

Complete pilot error, but who knows if the passengers pressured him to fly when he shouldn't have.

If you want to look on the bright side, slamming into the side of a mountain at that speed probably made it pretty quick way to go. Doubt they saw it coming

Yeah I actually read something yesterday about how miserable it must have been for him to hold his daughter knowing they were both about to die (Initial reports were that the helicopter was on fire, had an issue).

Being a helpless father in that situation would have been excruciating. Hopefully they never knew there was an issue and it just "happened".

What was the weather ceiling? They weren't close to their destination...why fly so low? Is a VFR/IFR restriction thing?

Did he regularly use a helicopter just to travel across town?

Yes but Newport Beach to Thousand Oaks (yesterday's destination) isn't just across town. It's about an 80 mile drive.

However, moments later -- around 9:45 AM -- they flew into a mountain at 1700 feet. Flight tracker data shows they were flying at about 161 knots.
(That is almost 200 miles a hour).

Not that there could ever be a silver lining per se. But at least this wasn't the crash on the video that was going around where the chopper was spinning in the air for 10-15 seconds before fire balling. It was probably over before anyone knew what happened.

A friend of mine used to fly utility company employees to check power lines( plane, not helicopter).Once after a storm with lines down, utility guy wanted to fly looking for downed lines and poles. My friend wanted to wait because he felt the weather was too unsettled but the utility guy pressured him into going. They ended up crashing but neither was injured. After that when my friend didn’t want to fly the utility guy didn’t argue.

There's an eye witness account on a YouTube video on the MSB.

Guy said it was an instantaneous boom.

yeah, I've seen that a bit with celebs, that chopper was probably like bling to him and just because you have the $ doesn't mean you know how to do the due diligence, a lot of times celebs go on the cheap because they don't know any better, Scotty Pippen had a G-II when he was playing that was old and ragged out when he bought it, it looked just like a brand new one and the purchase price was cheap, he didn't die in it but it killed him financially, he's a broke assed bitch these days

yeah pipeline patrols are usually, not always, flown by low time pilots, usually flight instructors(entry level position for civilians,) that are trying to build time/experience to try and move up the food chain

After this tragedy I refuse to step in one unless absolutely necessary.

It wasn't the helicopter's fault and by all accounts, that model is apparently one of the safest helicopters produced.

"You're still too low level for flight following at this time."

Last thing said before radar contact lost.

Damn.
