Trying to figure out what kind of math is being used there. They took a 3 year period and tried to make it a per capita argument?

Its pretty basic

But people feel pressure (or just arrogance) to beat mother nature in aircraft all the time.
I'm left wondering if the pilot felt pressure flying a celebrity
There was also the added time crunch of delivering the pax to their BB game in time

Lots of smaller aircraft are fitted with some sort of TAWS system. One local operator has displays that highlight terrain around you that is near or above your elevation.

After this tragedy I refuse to step in one unless absolutely necessary.
why blame the helicopter when it was clearly pilot error?

does anyone know if the chopper was owned by Kobe and if the pilot was his employee or if it was a wet lease/fractional ownership? not that it matters at this point, just curious

Weather related probably. I read that the LAPD choppers were grounded because of the fog/rain.

They weren't grounded at John Wayne
That is correct and John Wayne is in Orange County which is more coastal plain as opposed to Thousand Oaks which is in the Santa Monica Mountains area with a lot of canyons where sea fog tends to linger.
What is telling is that the pilot was cleared yesterday only for visual and not intruments which meant he would use land marks, a lot of helicopters in L.A. will use the freeways as a guide in that clearance.
If he was going instrument primarily with a filed flight plan, ATC probably would have grounded him until the fog burned off a little more.
I'm thinkink the pilot clipped something in the Calabassas area...maybe the top of a ridge?

Seems like a ton of poor choices were made. It was a helicopter, he could just stop

listening to the ATC recording when he was switched over to Van Nuys just north of Calabasas, the visibility was being listed as 2500 and was confirmed by the pilot

What I have read and been told, the helicopter was owned and registered to Island Express. The Pilot was employed by the company and he flew Kobe regularly.

Island Express Charter owned it and Kobe started leasing it to get to and from his home and the Staples center for practice/games.

i'm sure this is an extremely ignorant question. but if the weather was that bad why take off? why not land and wait it out? instead of circling and taking some weird flight path?
You work for a very famous multimillionaire and don’t want to disappoint him

Terrain alarms going off, loss contact with tower due to terrain inteference, loss of line of site. Appears he should have went to instruments, hovered and dropped down. He might have climbed to get above cloud deck. We'll never know why he chose forward motion at that speed.
The above is info from 3 pilots with one knowing that area pretty well, listening to towers and looking at radar flight pattern.

Pilot error or more likely, client pressure on the pilot to get there and now

better to disappoint him than kill him

I see, at least it was a professional arrangement instead of "hey bubba, go fire up the bird and let's go to the bb game," again, not that it matters at this point, but a lot of times private ownership with an inexperienced pilot is almost like Russian Roulette
