"it's foggy and ATC has grounded planes, maybe we shouldn't fly today"

tracker data shows they were flying at about 161 knots.
(That is almost 200 miles a hou, that bird wont fly 200r).
That can not be accurate, A S-76 is not capable of that at full speed and empty.

Sounds like "Get-there-itis" and an overconfident pilot.
Flying VFR into IMC. It has killed MANY people. Very sad.

it can go that fast but tracker is looking at gs, could have had some winds aloft?

Has the pilot's name been released yet?
I posted his name on page 3 of this thread.

I still don't understand this was a helicopter, it can land vertically right? Why could they not just fly at 5000 ft until they get to their destination, then hover land straight down basically? There has to be reasons, with GPS you can get within feet of your destination.

If the pilot flies into IMC conditions and becomes disoriented, he can't just set it down.

No doubt! My company owns a King Air and the owners never over rule the pilot. What the pilot says when it comes to the aircraft, sticks.

Here I am learning acronyms and basic flight info to understand what the hell is going on.

The pilot was instrument rated on top of all this. I haven't seen if he's current on that rating.
But they were flying VFR and reportedly went into IMC which is a big no-no obviously even if properly licensed.
Very sad.

was probably CFIT due to SD of the PIC, EET and IFR training was probably lacking at the 135 operator

The airport probably was not grounding people. So pilots discretion. Rich client/clients? Forgot important rule. “Better to be on the ground wishing you were flying, than flying and wishing you were on the ground. “
I wonder how much of this was, "hey, we got a game to get to... it's not that bad"

I believe he is current.

I was reading about that.
Sad all around.

Doubt they saw it coming
It said they were descending at 4000 feet per minute when they hit. They knew it was coming.
All you can do is make peace.

They probably saw it coming at the last moments. But they may have all thought everything was fine up until the last few moments.

wow, didn't see that, with that sink rate it sounds like spatial disorientation and CFIT under power, doubt if that chopper could do 4000 fpm down in a free fall

I dont think so. They pulled up a bit made a turn and crashed at 1700'. They were at 2400' I believe.
Sounds like it happened very fast. Hopefully for all on board it was a few seconds of terror before it was over.

Certainly, but unlike an airplane they don't have to continue moving forward right? Are helicopter pilots not taught how to simply go into a hover if they are disoriented? I honestly don't know, that just seems like a simple thing to do in my head?
