I recently picked up a job as a para at a school in Wichita while working to finish my education certification (lol teacher I know) and it’s sad how addicted to phones kids are these days. Half of them can’t put it down to focus on a task for five seconds, much less socialize with anyone. You can see a clear development gap between the ones who aren’t dependent on their phone vs those who are when it comes to socializing and basic intelligence. What can we as a society do to fix this?

My 11 yr old can't even answer basic questions, but he can play Fortnight with three friends and group chat on his phone at the same time with three others. Can't answer if he's hungry or not. Great.

Nothing
Horse has long since left that barn. Hell I can’t get full grown adults to sit and converse without constantly checking a device. When you see 2-4 yos walking around with their new electronic pacifier we are done.

I have a one year old and this is something I've really started to think about. I'm on my phone way too much as it is, I need to work at putting it away when I'm home with him so he doesn't see me staring at it.
11 is way too young for a phone IMO, but what do you do when all the other kids have a phone? You don't want your kid to be the odd man out, right?

Stop giving kids devices they don’t need.

We can definitely solve it, as adults, discussing it on our phones or computers while most of us are supposed to be working

I see this everyday with my students. Y’all want to hear something worse?
The new classroom ABC cards are abandoning the age old B is for new or bird. It’s all fast food and junk food. B is for burger, T is for Twix. They figure it’s all kids know now.

This seems so easy to fix. The kid is 11.

Parents are the simple answer.
All your friends have phones? Well, you're only 10, and you're not getting a phone.
All your friends have an X-box One so they can play fortnite? Well, you're only 10 and you don't get an X-Box live membership.
For those with older kids:
We're eating a meal... put your phone on the counter.
We're going to church...leave your phone at home.
It's bedtime.... put your phone in the kitchen.
Sometimes the parent has to be a parent. And better yet, the real problem is monkey see monkey do.

On a grand scale, not much that can be done for society, but as individuals, perhaps taking the phone away from them and taking them on regular outdoor adventures to introduce them to the world they live on and real life that awaits them might be a step in the right direction.
From TV’s, to computers, smart phones, video games, etc, everything they take into their minds spells programming and phony. It cripples society, and you can see it’s effects in the extreme lack of social skills these kids possess as they get older and begin to enter the work world.
I don’t think we can save society, but maybe you can save your kid from it’s effects, or at least give them some balance.

Be a parent. Control your kids.
My daughter has an iPad and has had one for years. She watches arts and crafts videos on YouTube kids. I walked into her playroom the other day and she was watching a painting video and had her paints out and was painting along. She makes little crafts all the time that she gets ideas from on YouTube.
If you don’t want your kids being social idiots, don’t allow them to be.

I know for a fact were my grandson goes to school, all kids have to turn their phones off as soon as they walk in for the day. It must stay in their book sack.
