Just looked up New Orleans Murders in 2026

Seems like the city is improving dramatically from a crime standpoint. I know it gets a lot of negative reviews on this board but what is driving the drop in crime?

Gang war ended on the side of I10 in the East a year or two ago. Interstate murders, and a lot of other fighting, died along with him.
2025 was historically low even counting the terrorist attack. 2026 improved on that.

My brother in Christ, the national Guard has been there most of the year.

the national guard was deployed there from December '25 until last month. one of the guys stationed there just posted about it recently.

I think the a lot of the youngins realized that spending 40 years in prison for something that you could have walked away from is stupid.
Prison populations are rapidly decreasing. It's why Texas has re-criminalized weed. They need to fill the prisons back up.

Good point, New Orleans decriminalization of weed has likely played a lot in this as well.

Of course we know this.
The real help in decreasing crime was some state troop officers coming in and arresting the worst of the worst.
And the DA is finally doing his job.
Last years murders number was pretty low as well even with the 12 included from the terror attack.

2024 and 2025 were some of the lowest numbers in 40 years (2019 was the lowest before then). Before Troop Nola or the Nat Guard showed up.
The dramatic crime drop across the country has to be something left over after whatever went wrong during covid. Only thing that makes sense to see it everywhere.

You mentioned murders, and then you mentioned a drop in crime.
The two are not related. Now, perhaps crime HAS dropped. But murder is just a successful attempt at killing someone.

DA doing something. Federal prosecutors and federal law enforcement helping out in 2023 through present also helps a lot.

Non-firearm homicide is the biggest outlier. That number is pretty low in general.
Last year was a pretty low benchmark year for crime so when looking at the 2 and 3 year improvements it shows better.
