re: JBE Exec. Counsel: rescinding order would effectively open schools, cancel federal aid

JBE doesn't want to back down, but he also doesn't want to give up all the photo ops, press coverage, and press conferences he's getting. This is his narcissistic dream come true. He would stand before cameras and wag his finger at us forever if we let him.

So what they are saying is that the legislature shouldn't cancel the emergency declaration because that cancels everything, all restrictions and all emergency aid.
Can't disagree with that. Considering the devastating loss of sales tax income and oil revenues, we need the federal aid right now.
But that doesn't mean that there is no place for the legislature to collaborate on the restrictions.

The Republicans must be touching a nerve, because Nola.com/the Advocate are full on Pro-Stay At Home propaganda right now.

Look, it's a bargaining tool. JBE needs to modify the decision outright, or at least continue to loosen restrictions if he wants to save face. Starting Friday.
But the Superintendent, BESE, the Louisiana Board of Regents, State Fire Marshall, and the Courthouse Gang can easily be engaged through PJAL or LMA to simply issue regional-based decision-making super quickly.
There are some SERIOUS, old-school, consensus building politicos in PJAL (Police Jury Association of LA) and LMA (Louisiana Municipal Association). Those guys and the Sheriff's Association rope in almost all of the Courthouse Gang (Parish Assessor, Sheriff, District Attorney...and perhaps the Police Jury President/Parish Presidents) and could easily issue Parishwide edicts that all are similar in nature that would replace any educational or law-enforcement or retail business-related regulations as we eased out of the quarantine/shelter-in-place.
You don't NEED the Governor. If he's irrational or playing politics, there are other levers of government-and other politicians-who can and do get shite done in a major way statewide on a daily basis here in Louisiana.

Yeah, I don’t see anything wrong with opening schools. Especially knowing how little this affects kids and young adults. They’re not in danger and they’re really bad at spreading it anyway. I know it’s just a couple weeks
This is a genuine question, not trying to start an argument and won’t even be able to read and respond until later, but what about them then bringing it home to overweight moms, dads, grandparents, etc?
I get the kids are hardly affected part, but then it expounds onto the population. Isn’t that the larger problem?

I 100% get what you are saying but if at this point you don’t keep your kid away from their obese grandma that’s on you.
These people are not staying in their homes, they aren’t keeping their kids locked in their rooms, they are playing at the neighbors house or with their cousins that play with their neighbors.

At the very least, I think it would affect the extra $600 people are getting for unemployment.
That whole unemployment thing sticks in my craw. When the declaration of emergency was declared, JBE immediately waived the requirements for food stamp recipients to get the max amount, so 63% of the current applicants automatically got the max amount. I work for a medical supply company so I'm considered essential. But since we rely on doctors, hospitals, etc. business has slowed to the point of my hours have been reduced. No problem our company told us because we can apply for unemployment and check the box that this is a Covid-19 application to at least receive some relief. But to our surprise, most of us are being denied unemployment because we're making right over the $247 threshold to qualify. So, if you don't qualify for the state unemployment, you do not even qualify for the extra fed amount of $600. So, thanks a lot JBE. You waive the requirements for the freebies but hold the blue collar working class to a different standard.

Not our problem. Not the states problem. Those at risk will need to do whatever it is they need to do to ensure their safety. But that’s THEIR problem. Not everyone else’s. The same group is going to be at risk until a vaccine or cure is found. We cannot sequester everyone else forever because of it.

Not because they have your health in mind, but because they’ve squeezed every dollar out of this that they could and there’s nothing left for THEM to gain.

But there’s been a study out of Switzerland that has shown why kids aren’t affected by this virus... For some reason there just isn’t much of the virus that stays in the kids system. So they don’t spread it and they don’t get the symptoms. Sure, they’ll cause some spread increase. But it’ll be minimal. Here’s an easy fix to help you feel better: have the kids wash when they get home and make them change clothes. It’s not that difficult, people.

JBE is a piece of shite.

This thread should get a sticky.
Our piece of shite governor is killing families and small business in our state so he can hold out for federal funding. None of which will go to the people actually impacted by this. It’s disgusting and all of our elected officials should be up in arms.
I hope his fat little troll is reading this thread too.

BRAVEFFINGOOHHHH!
My thoughts exactly. Let the citizens suffer for the government’s good. Perverted thought process by a guy getting paid by taxes to live in a Mansion on the side of the River.

This is the first I am hearing this.
I was under the impression if you had hours cut (“under-employed”) you still received the federal benefit but not the state.
I know you have to go through the state still to apply but there are income limitations on the $600 federal benefit also?

If you don’t qualify for state, you don’t get any Federal. It only takes $1 from state to receive the full federal funding.

This is exactly the philosophy of the Democratic Party. Do nothing and let someone else pay for it. If there had been no wuhan virus, the businesses and tax revenues would have supplied the income to run the state. Why can’t we just go back to that??? Because the democrats think they can make more for doing less. They are so short sighted that they can’t even see beyond the fact that the extra unemployment money is limited to 3-4 months or whatever it is.
Granted the oil prices have and will affect the states budget, but so what? Wuhan has affected my budget and I spend less now. The state has to do the same. Quit looking at the federal money as part of your income that you can’t do without.
As far as the schools, my kids have had zero at home schooling. No books to read, no zoom classes, no nothing. It’s summer. They would all love to go back to school and see their friends for two more weeks. And as far as the teachers, do your job and get your paycheck like everybody else. School teachers are no different from restaurant workers who have no income based on this order. Sorry but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
The threat of an ALL OPEN by the gop is purely strategy to get Edwards to negotiate a middle ground agreement, like phase 1, because they are all idiots who have to negotiate everything instead of just agreeing to good policy.

It was ALWAYS about the money. This whole thing was about money. JBE doesn’t have to address what he’s gonna do to diversify the state economy with the price of oil tanking.

I guess I was mistaken. I thought the federal was treated separately and you could get $0 from the state and still qualify for the federal.

Can you just lessen the restrictions, still have schools closed, and still get the federal aid?
The legislature cannot.
They can only rescind the declaration of emergency. It's basically the nuclear option.
I made the point yesterday that it is in the GOP's best interest to attempt to leverage JBE into a phase 1 opening with this before outright passing the petition.
Force his hand.
