the prosecutors had to have known that going in. I would think there will be other witnesses to hammer home the fact that JW knew that this tax guy was fraudulent and that he went to him to save significantly on taxes, not for actual legit tax advice. Two lawyers from his office are taking the stand along with JWs ex wife, and all have pled guilty to tax charges. I’d imagine they are going to say that they all went to this tax guy who will just enter whatever you give him, no questions asked. They’ll probably prove intent. The female law partner seems to have known the tax prep guy and was at the center of all of it.

I'm sure you are right. Isn't this going to be a trial that takes like 2 or 3 weeks with a ton of people to testify.

Like the football announcers always say in the third and fourth quarter, "there's a lot of football left to play." Usually followed by other gems like "if you're behind, but you can get enough first downs, you can put yourself in a position to put some points on the board. If you put enough on the board, you'll win!"

While it may look bad based on what has been reported from the tax preparer...
quote:

That would be a pretty good defense for anyone charged with a tax crime. Isn't that what every businessman in America does- hand their information to their accountant who prepares the return?

You are still ultimately responsible for your return. You are required to take ownership and part of that ownership is an understanding of what revenues, deductions, credits... are used when preparing. You are not required to know the tax codes, but when you are underreporting taxable income by several hundred thousand dollars, there is some ownership there.

That’s what the media has reported. Sounds like a dreadful and boring juror experience.

and even the accountant doesn't say Williams told him to lie.

Timothy said made-up expense numbers came from Burdett and Williams. "We kept increasing the deductions to where they seemed unreasonable," Timothy said.

"I felt pressure and I felt like I was helping them," Timothy said later.

Sounds like he told him without telling him. Whether you believe him or not, the numbers were clearly off and Williams should have easily realized that.

it sounds like there is a bit of a better case against Burdette than Williams since Burdette was the one dealing with the accountant all the time.

Not sure how much if any cover that gives JW because if it was that easy the Feds would never be able to convict a mafia head or anyone else using a “buffer.”

Has there been any allegation that Williams and his law partner were more than business associates?

Yeah, the federal government thinks they are felons in addition to being business partners.

Boosie badazz the IRONY is Lil Boosie's HUGE cash payments to Jason Williams are a part of all this. Remember it was Williams and Burdette that got him off his murder charge.

And she hasn't pled. She's facing charges still.

What is Williams defense?

He is claiming that his accountant fricked up and now that Cannizaro was witch hunting him?

How is that legal?

he won't be the DA anymore, which is the most important thing.

Do you really think it matters at this point? Orleans would just elect someone just as bad. At no point will the democrats in the city ever reconsider their voting habits.

How do you put Williams in prison for that, unless you claim he "knew" what the guy was doing was wrong. Seems pretty hard to prove.

That’s… umm…. Like every single tax case ever.

It’s not like it’d be in the memo line of a check for fraudulent services rendered. When your expenses are hundreds of thousands of dollars off it’s hard to claim “oh shite, I didn’t notice. You mean we didn’t spend $60k on paper clips and highlighters last year?!?”

Found an obviously shady guy
Told him to push harder
Handled his business in sketchy ways
Is a highly educated lawyer, and civic leader

You buy a 2022 model car with no keys from a meth head for 5% of the msrp and you’ll have a hard time claiming you had no idea it was stolen just because the guy didn’t explicitly tell you

Defense rested without calling any witnesses. It appears that the jury just got its instructions.

Unfortunately, everyone I have talked to that has some knowledge on it that thought he was done pre-trial has totally flipped and thinks he will get off.

He was VERY smart about being a scumbag and gave himself a ton of plausible deniability. He isn't a totally dumb guy.

And the IRS conducted a sloppy investigation, and the US Attorneys office did a pretty poor job on presenting evidence. The previous Judge's rulings also hurt.

Most people I know think he will walk on criminal charges but have to pay back some taxes.

This case was never about paying back the taxes. He's already lost that audit and has accepted he needs to pay up. The defense has admitted as such.

This is simply about did he commit fraud, or was this all not his fault?
