I’ve spent a few months in India (nice parts) and one thing strikes me

Everyone seems to hate the British and they blame their colonizers for their lack of progress. But in fact, their lack of progress is because the British left after WW2 (basically Hitler made Britain go broke and lose its empire).
But before then, Britain built their entire infrastructure including ports and rail networks, and unified Indian under a common language. That and the partition would have never happened.
But what have the British ever done for US?

Pretty on-brand for third worlders. Blame the British who haven’t been in your country since 1945 for the fact that you have open high voltage electrical on every street corner and 50 people get run over by trains daily. Anyone who’s ever spent time around Indian people knows exactly why they’re one of the worst, dirtiest countries on earth and it ain’t because of a bunch of 110 year old British guys

Ain’t nearly enough intriguing juice in visiting there worth my squeezing.
The vast majority of the Indians I’ve met in the rest of the world in my life so far do not make me wish to see millions of more folks like them.

At least for Britain, their overseas colonial empire, while providing some degree of benefit for them (access to resources and manpower they might not have had otherwise), it was a net loss/cost for them and a net gain/benefit for virtually every place they "colonized".
And they're hated for it...

It was a great boon to Britain, and they made fortunes. Eventually it became a net loss because the colonized people were resisting.
It was so lucrative that the Dutch were run out of there by the British. Napoleon strongly considered an overland assault from Egypt, and Russia fought with the British for a hundred years to gain the approaches to India in Central Asia.
If you still doubt how lucrative it was consider this. Britain did not manage India. It was managed by a private for profit company. It wasn’t until about 1850 - half way through the British reign there - that the British government took back control. And this was done because the British East India Company had become so rich it had become too powerful.

I’ve made multiple trips to India and the thing that strikes me is the smell. Now, even years later if I sit here and think about it, I can smell India.

Was in East Africa last month and they didn’t seem to hold anything against the British. English is now even the national language of Kenya. They seemed thankful more than anything
Reading “Shantaram” now which takes place in Mumbai in the 80s and it sounds like a wild place and definitely not for your average traveler.

I mean, the British do suck. Absolutely suck. So I don’t blame them.
Also, I know some well to do Indians and they love the British. I’m friends with one and she said they always try to go to Britain first before they come to America.
My friend’s family banned her from visiting the UK because their eldest daughter became a doctor in the UK and shouldn’t be bothered by “silly sibling distraction” from her important job

Plus, as you know, if you run a government like a business, services suffer, costs skyrocket and people vote it out. If you run a business like a government, you go broke with the quickness.
So, they probably should have just taxed the business a bit more rather than taking over.
And my point stands: It was a net negative to Britain and they're still hated for it. India and other English/British colonies gained more from being colonized by Britain than the British did. The fact these colonized folks either couldn't or wouldn't maintain it and build on it is on them.

Just about every former British colony is much better off for what the Brits did. The former French colonies? Not so much.

The Brits gave us the bill of rights, which makes it very easy to explain to anyone they colonialized (including the Irish) why Americans have a "stupid" obsession with guns, etc. To explain why we have an amendment for guns, and one barring the quartering of soldiers, which seemed weird to them, I just said, "think about what the Brits did to you." The penny dropped.
This book was excellent. Sir Alan Burns seems to be the cream of the crop when it comes to colonial benevolence. The negatives of colonialism are also discussed. However, one of the biggest causes of colonial collapse in the third world was the way the the colonial powers essentially pulled a Biden in Afghanistan, and left the nascent governments unable to deal with the consequences.

When any group cant cut the mustard they will always blame someone else, because power seekers use it as political force to gain more power and money. There are entire industries based on blame hustling.
