Smelling the cork is literally the tell tale sign of a poser. You gain little to nothing by doing this. Sniff the glass as the wine aerates around it.
I say drink what tastes good to you. I know wealthy people who drink mainly $10-15 bottles of wine because that’s what they like.
I could also give you about 5 bottles of wine under $30 that are probably better than bottles that are $70 and up. Anyone talking about vintages etc that are under the age of 60or stupid wealthy, is just an a-hole unless your job is sommelier.

There’s a thread from yesterday where I said essentially the same thing. They’ve done those blind taste tests and the wine snobs couldn’t tell the difference between a $15 bottle and a $500 bottle.
Had a cousin that was a sommelier, he would tell you that the price doesn’t always dictate the quality.

Those who smell the cork, let it breathe, swirl and sniff the wine, take a small sip and contemplate for 10 seconds before giving an opinion.
I do this ironically with the cheap shite I drink.
I do drink bourbons a certain way on first sip. Nothing showy, I just like to see what I'm working with.

I can think of 10 types of snobs that are worse.

People who pick their nose and eat it, especially in public

Smelling the cork meant something different back in my day

If you don’t think a wine snob will whine with the best of them, I’ve got a children’s book to sell you.

Based on the info in another thread…food poisoning seems worse.

No! Those who practice the pretentious arts have deep rooted insecurity from red dye in M&Ms combined with late potty training.
It’s science.

There are some things I enjoy that others probably think is stupid as shite. Hell, I put together a lego set the other night and really enjoyed it. Some people would probably be like "dude thats toys for kids. Do some adult shite" so I try not to judge people being into whatever they are into.

I loved bourbon, scotch, and cognac neat before my acid reflux made that too uncomfortable to do regularly. With that said, all of the above are more pleasant at temperatures in the mid to high 60s and allowed to warm as opposed to standard “room temperature” of low to mid 70s that most people serve it which is then warmed by body heat from there.

At what age were you potty trained?
Eat a lot of red M&Ms?
This is for science! Kidding.

Young enough that I don’t remember, and no.

Yes, quite a few things

I’ll bet in a blind taste test of several bottles ranging in various low and high prices, these types could not tell the difference.
Go watch the documentary Somm

I have a friend from high school, grew up normal middle class, mainly drank beer in mass quantities, but now has come into wealth and suddenly he’s a wine expert.
Sounds like jealousy
