Financially, it’s third world. It is, however, undeniably my favorite place on earth.

The craziest part to me is that the poorest county in the state isn't even located in the delta

The only area that I've been to that rivals the poverty there is the old coal areas of Appalachia

No major industry... so most of the people work the land. However, most of the land is owned by very few people. The landowners are super wealthy, and because there are so few other job options, can get away with paying their workers an insanely small amount of money.
The public schools are terrible (the wealthy send their kids to the elite private schools), so the next generation is unable to get a good job, and leave... and most of them don't know anything about the world outside their area.
After slavery ended a lot of the slaves got some land of their own but eventually lost it as they couldn't pay off business debts.
And for those of you who want to make "demographic" conclusions... the Delta is pretty much the same as Appalachia. Actually, the Delta might have BETTER job prospects than Appalachia.

The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar.
I am following the river down the highway through the cradle of the Civil War.

I agree with you that there are probably more job opportunities in the delta vs. appalachia. The unfortunate thing is that the public schools in the area set the younger generations up to fail for the majority.

Some of the native reservations out West are right there with those two areas.

You should go to the reservation in Choctaw county, MS then. Far more depressing to me than the delta.

Man you are not lying. I swear children in the slums of Sub-Saharan Africa live better.

I stopped at a lil restaurant/gas station in the middle of nowhere a few years back. I think it was around Vicksburg. It was about 7 oclock and darker than sin. I walked in and there was a dude playing guitar and singing. Ended up sitting and listening to him for about an hour. The hostess wasn't bad looking and she kept looking at me and patting her head. I was trying to figure out what that meant and then realized that she was scratching her head without disturbing her wig and I was the creep for staring. Was a pretty chill place, though.

It’s wildly poor.
However I absolutely love the place.
My family is from and lives in Shelby/Gunnison. Everyone I know up there farms. If you don’t farm you’re probably poor af.

Germans (real Germans) are buying the good farm land up there.

A lot of these schools are just segregation academies... the education isn’t elite

Yeah. I can’t imagine any of the private schools there are better than Prep, JA, St. Andrew’s, or even the public schools in Rankin County.

Last time I went to the Delta, I went to Leland and Greenville. Leland is just kind of small and mostly white with little industry, while Greenville is majority black and nearly all of the businesses have shut down. Felt like the whole town was boarded up for a hurricane and they just never took anything down.

If you ever want a good taste of the Delta, ride the Amtrak City of New Orleans from Memphis to NOLA or vice versa. That train stops in borderline 3rd world places like Hazlehurst, Yazoo City, and Greenwood. Some pretty interesting folks get on and off. Once saw a lady in the dining car destroy a bag of 40 chicken wings in less than 20 minutes.

quote:I can only guess, but I guess that's all these folks know and can't afford or don't know how, etc., to leave. Downtown Ferriday/Waterproof is pretty damned depressing.
I’m passing through there right now and I feel like I’m in a 3rd world country. Why is this area so fricking poor?

Most of the wealthy kids go to boarding schools, or to MUS in Memphis if they live close enough.
