I will tell you this as a non-native Mississippian. I live in Madison and am shocked at the number of my friends and neighbors who grew up in the Delta and went to private school. Many of their parents have left as well.
As other have said, there is no industry there that makes a middle class. You either own massive amounts of land and farm it, you own a business that serves those farmers, or you are poor. There is no in between.
This is a recent reunion of Greenville High School graduates
This is the current faculty and staff at Greenville High School
This is the teacher pulling the special needs kid by the hair last year
It has been completely abandoned.

No.. It’s a giant agriculture region, with thousands of small ghettos.
There is a middle class, but it’s small.
The upper class is the landowners/farmers, and the business owners that service them. (Bankers, Lawyers, Implement dealerships, irrigation services, grain bin services, etc...). They make up like 1-2%.
The middle class is the people who manage the land, farms, maybe farm on a small scale, and some of the businesses mentioned above have managers, work at Delta St, etc... I am a farm manager and farm a little on the side... We make up like 5% MAYBE.
The lower class is the rest of the population. Whether they’re working or on government assistance, it’s probably not much of a difference in money when they net out at the end of the month.

You failed to mention extreme NE LA (East and West Carroll Parishes) and SE AR (Chicot County) as ghetto areas as well.

Those areas are considered the Delta as well. Just because they're not in Mississippi doesn't exclude them. The Mississippi Delta refers to those towns along the Mississippi River, not just the ones in Mississippi.

Bastrop, Merouge, Bonita & Jones say hi.
Technology has multiplied the number of acres one hand can manage by thousands. Messicans have supplanted the blacks as field hands and the blacks now trade in dope primarily. Bonus is the messicans can be sent home if they fark up.

Knew a couple of super rich folks from the Delta when I was at Ole Miss and been with them to visit. The wealth disparity is crazy. It feels like a handful of people are absolutely loaded and 99% of the population is completely impoverished.
Kind of like olden days

3rd world places like Hazlehurst, Yazoo City, and Greenwood.
Drove through all those places today. Ever heard of Belzoni, MS? That place looks like the slums of Eastern Europe

There is an excellent catfish restaurant in Belzoni though.
Those little small towns where two married teachers can live like millionaires are sad. I grew up in one. About a year ago, someone opened a Subway and the mayor was touting job growth on Facebook and the townspeople were so happy that they had a place to eat after 5 besides the Hunt Brothers Pizza at the gas station.
Its a much simpler life, and there is a lot of ugly that goes into it. My brother and sister in law still live there. My sister in law is one of the worst human beings on the planet, but everyone that meets her thinks she is an angel. They resent me because I got out.

Not sure if they still do, but I know several farmers in the south delta were importing South Africans for farm hands as well.

Almost all of mississippi, louisiana, and arkansas is one big ghetto. Facts of life.

We freed slaves and eventually replaced them with tractors.
The ones that stayed behind have limited abilities and little to do, and a government that feeds and houses them.
You could ask why there’s no industry there, but why would there be?

The biggest Industry in Greenwood is/was Viking Range. The owners sold it and I'm not sure if they still have their main manufacturing facilities there.

Enjoyed living in Cleveland for a few years. One of the best towns in the area... but that’s not saying much.

The worst is driving through Indian Reservations in Arizona. It's the ghetto but with tepees.
