I’m passing through there right now and I feel like I’m in a 3rd world country. Why is this area so fricking poor?

the curse of slavery.

ETA: Not sure why the DVs. You can't enslave people and expect not to feel some form of wrath.

Not a lot of jobs in the area. A plant can be tens of miles away and if you’re poor and in the Delta, gas is expensive.

I go to the Delta often.Yeah, they are poor, but the people there are so hospitable and kind. Except for Tchula. Lol. That place would make North BR blush.

I can't answer that, although I got the graphic below from the city-data.com website. I think it's pretty much reflective of the delta. I doubt that demographics really has anything to do with an elevated crime/high percentage of welfare/poorly educated/lack of a family structure system though.

What major industries drive the area? I know of a few large shipbuilding yards but there doesn't appear to be much outside of that to generate income in the area.

Farming.

Knew a couple of super rich folks from the Delta when I was at Ole Miss and been with them to visit. The wealth disparity is crazy. It feels like a handful of people are absolutely loaded and 99% of the population is completely impoverished.

It is an area dominated by farming.

So you have the rich landowners and then you have the workers.

Not many other jobs for a middle class.

Feel the wrath? by living in poverty? How does that get back at evil whitey?

The truth is that the Delta is like Northeast La (West Carroll and East Carroll Parish) The economy is agriculture based. Unless you own land agriculture is low paying work. Land is crazy expensive so agriculture has a high barrier to entry.

Any body that doesn't want a low paying job and has opportunity or drive leaves the area to go work somewhere else. This leaves the area populated by people that live in poverty and raise their children in poverty.

You are spot on. I grew up in Franklin Parish which is basically the same. I did not realize how similar East Arkansas, West Mississippi and NE Loisiana were until I got older. It is easy for someone not from the area to make generalizations and disparaging remarks. The area is economically depressed and the only way to improve your lot is leave unless you are a land owner or business owner that serves the ag industry. Most of my friends dads would supplement income in the winter by working in the oilfield. That is not as available as it used to be. It is a case of some folks just not knowing there is a better life if you go find it.

There use to be a black belt in the south. The yankee corporations would not locate a business there.
