Or do people just say that the city of New Orleans is north of the river?

Neither

If you were to pull the Mississippi River taut NOLA would be east of the river but with the exception of the terms East Bank and West Bank I’ve never heard any say the city is east of the river.

Part of it is east of the river, and part of it is west of the river. Although the part that is west of the river is east of the part on the east bank. Got it?

yes
the original "isle of orleans" was the only territory east of the river that france ceded to spain

quote:

In 1762, France, anticipating that Great Britain would take Louisiana at the end of the French and Indian War, in the Treaty of Fontainebleau transferred to Spain all of Louisiana west of the Mississippi River, as well as a newly-defined area east of the Mississippi which included New Orleans, called the Isle of Orleans.

With the Mississippi River flowing south to north as part of the crescent from the Lower Garden District up past the French Quarter, the eastbank is west of the river and the westbank (Algiers) is east of the river.

Really? I always thought the Carrollton gage was at river mile 110 or 115 or so. I always assumed the "river mile" measurement started at someplace like SW Pass or Pilot town.

I have always just said "New Orleans is on the Mississippi River".

Not east, west, north or south. Just on it. IN it sometimes.
