To the OP.. Do you buy a car without test driving it?

I'm not the OP nor do I care if people live together before marriage but this is a terrible example. Works for some but clearly is not necessary.

Oh and ftr, I research like crazy before I even sit in the car, much less drive it.

So is there any reason this is trashy besides religious ones?

Or maybe parental objections, but that just stems from religious reasons anyway.

in todays age with social media, divorce rates, and the instant gratification lifestyle, i would say that is is irresponsible not to live with someone before getting married to them.

I don't think so.

I've never been married.

Lived with two girls. One was miserable and it fortunately ended. The one I live with now is great and I'll be buying her a ring soon.

If you're living together before marriage, you're defeating the purpose of marriage. The whole point of marriage is to combine households, pool resources, and front poop out babies into a stable, conducive environment.

how so? how are you taking away from marriage at all?

if marriage was an app, living together would just be marriage lite

You don't have to be married to do any/all of these things.

And living together beforehand certainly doesn't defeat the purpose of any of them either. You can combine households, pool resources, and create as many frick trophies as you want with or without being married.

Basically, you're being married without being married. The only difference between living together when you're not married and being married is that there's a piece of paper saying saying "she gets half your stuff if you split up". Heck, in many states, you are considered in a "common law marriage" if you live together for 5 or more years.

Imagine you like beer, and there's a bar next door that lets you drink all you want of your chosen brew for free. Would you buy six packs of that beer? Would you pay for the expense of a kegerator and purchase kegs of that beer to drink at home? You could, but what's the point? You're already getting what you want, so why go through the trouble and expense?

That's my point. The purpose of marriage is completely undermined by simply doing as you say, because it gives you all of the benefits without exposing you to the contractual liabilities that marriage imposes on leaving the arrangement.

Not as trashy as asking the OT if it's trashy.

So, why get married at all... ever?

Sounds like you're just anti-marriage, regardless of the living situation.

IMHO, the purpose of marriage is commitment. You'd rather sleep separate from your chick every night until you're married? That's a stupid idea
