If I was them, i'd probably want some type of input into what is going in, if I am going to be sharing it. That's just me though.

That was kind of my thought as well. To some degree I am changing "their" fence, so I felt I had some obligation to at least talk to them about the decision. But if I paid for it solo they would be getting the benefit of a (partial) new fence for free.

Personally I would feel obligated to chip in for that benefit, but didn't know if it would be rude to ask others for the same courtesy

I don't think asking for them to pay for 1/2 of their portion of the fence is unreasonable. You'll have to battle more than likely if they think the fence needs updating, and may be unwilling to pay for something they don't think is necessary. If that is the case, they get no input if the fence doesn't match the rest of their fence exactly (unless there are any neighborhood uniformity rules or anything)

When my neighbor replaced her fence, I asked her to find out how much it would cost for the part along our common property line, and I paid 1/2 of that.

Only fair, keeps both property values up.

BOOM.

I think if someone wants to replace it, they should pay for it. Go talk with the neighbor and tell them you would like to put up a new fence and you just wanted to get with them first to see if its okay (just a curtesy). If they are willing to pay they will offer.. If not, frick em.. Its your fence.

no frickin way should you curtsy just for a damn fence. have some frickin pride and just pay for it man.

Ive always wondered how I can determine whose fence it actually is. If it's mine and can be proven then I have the right to tear it down correct? Assuming they wouldn't want to help pay for new boards.

Do your neighbors have the rest of their yards fenced in? If so, sure. If not, only you should pay.

Sounds very reasonable to me and id gladly pay half, regardless of which side the boards faced

I think this is the right answer. If the fence is within your property, it is your fence and you will have to pay to replace.

If you're a Lake Charles baller, here's what you do.

Step 1: get a rickety metal fence.

Step 2: send this letter to your neighbor:

So the cheapest frick, to the point of having a falling apart fence, wins?

Typically board facing side pays, although I wouldn't consider it unacceptable to ask. If they aren't interested no harm no foul replace it yourself as your funds allow.

You could also do a shadowbox fence where boards alternate sides.

Having built fence for a while when younger I have seen neighbors go in to put up a fence. It's not that rare.

My neighbors had chain link, so I just built my wooden next to their fence.

It's reasonable to ask.

But it's just as reasonable for them to say "no thanks."

Don't ask if you're not willing to accept that answer peacefully.

I guess I failed to mention, the biggest issue is all the seems line up.
So the 2x4s are bowing.

The two I built I used 12' studs with 6' spacing of posts.

Sure it's okay. I will just tell you that I currently don't have the money to help replace the fence at this time. Thanks for asking me though.
