I have a set of Williams hand tools that I'm very satisfied with.

Snap on hand tools are the best. No discussion there. Now, are they worth the price? IMO, only for certain things. Buying a 3/4" 48" ratchet? Yes, it's worth it. Buying a an impact wrench to use in your garage? No way.

For air tools you can't go wrong with Ingersoll Rand. Chicago Pneumatic as well. Next time you're in a tire shop look at what they're using. It will be IR almost every time. There's a reason for that.

Most guys aren't going to hunt for used tools or spend too end money though. They want to go to a local store and spend a modest amount for tools that will last them many years of occasional use, like they used to be able to do with craftsmen. People who don't do heavy work for a living don't know how much true quality tools cost nor do they need that kind of stuff. What brand does that guy go get and where does he get it from?

they'd be amazed putting a 3/8" drive ratchet in a 1/4" drive body in their hands with that butter 90 tooth drive.

A lot of my stuff is Milwaukee. I like their products.

I've got a Craftsman hammer, wrenches, ratchet/socket set and screwdrivers that I've had for 35 years and I'm sure will last till I die. I've had luck with their radial saws, mitre saws, table saws, edgers and lawnmowers too. But I've got a Craftsman string trimmer I'd like to throw in the fricking lake every Saturday.

Craftsman will work fine for that

Eta: What really pisses me off is the price for a good bench vise. God damn, I almost have to sell my kidney to get a fricking 4" one

I was given an old 4" Wilton mechanics vise. Had a little rust and lots of grime on it but the jaw pads were sharp. Keeping an eye out for a 6" or so Tradesman, lot of people have no idea what they are worth.

My uncle hits up flea markets once a month, and people know what old American made ones are worth

That's why I look for estate sales. I did get a 1"-3" set of Mitutoyo micrometers for $20 at an outdoor market in Philly last year though.

My last shop had $1500 ones at each work station. I still can't figure out why they are so expensive

I've got to know, these 3 brands you referenced, Industrial tools?

I've gotten a bunch of the stahwille sockets from craigslist before. They are top quality german made tools. I've heard of the japanese brands he mentioned but I've never used them.

Another off brand I really like is Toptul. Can't warranty them so I wouldn't recommended them to anyone but they are top quality.

My favorite rachet is the now discontinued big dawg from proto. Proto (MAC) makes some good tools.

I get people whose job relies and requires top of the line tools to pay a premium for them.

I just don't get why people need to buy top of the line for 99% of homeowner projects though. If you buy just the midtier tools and take care of them, they are going to last a long time.

Just rebuilt the carb on my lawnmower, my few years old Stanley ~200pc mechanics tool set was fantastic.

There is a reason mechanics use them.

The reason is Matco and Snap-on send guys out to the shop and let you buy an overpriced tool at a time on credit making weekly payments with no credit check.

hand tools (sockets, end wrenches, etc) don't break under any kind of normal treatment. my 3/8 ratchet from 1962 is getting pretty sloppy, but i don't use it much any more.

i'm buying whatever is on sale at lowes these days, or pawn shops.

I'll use a good tool for the most mundane of tasks. Part of owning these tools is the enjoyment of using them for some folks.
