Craftsman, Husky or Kobalt will work just fine for anything you need them for. Snap on and matco are great tools but unless you're earning a living with them it would be ridiculous to pay the money for them.

And you pay for it. But it's one of the few things where the extra expense is worth it if you make your living with your tools or you just want tools you'll never have to replace.
That's why I went with Kobalt. I only do here and there with them. If they break, I'll just swap it. The reality is that they will most likely not break under the conditions I put them through.

Yea and mechanics financing $20k+ of tools are very often not very pleasant to deal with.
Snap on hand tools are the best. No discussion there. Now, are they worth the price? IMO, only for certain things. Buying a 3/4" 48" ratchet? Yes, it's worth it. Buying a an impact wrench to use in your garage? No way.

If the kid is not a pro mechanic and just doing brake jobs and oil changes, just about any tool set will do. The kirkland brand (costco) 159 piece tool set is on sale for $70 right now and it looks to be a clone of the Kobalt set.
For a DIYer you aren't going to go wrong with Craftsman, but I think most DIYer can get by on Harbor Freight crap. I know I've done plenty of repairs with my first Master Mechanic tool set from True Value hardware.

Ah yeah, I forgot about those. With Costco's return policy, I bet those are a good deal.

I can tell you they were at one time...all the Craftsman tools I own I inherited from Pops 19, so none were purchased after 1965.
Borrowed and never returned are the only problem I've ever had with em.
-cept the leather rings on my hammer finally gave way a few weeks ago.

OP did ask about the "best"

Snap-on isn't. Stahwille is the better choice if willing to spend that kind of money. Hell, there are Japanese brands like Koken and Nepros that make some of Snap-ons stuff look like HF tools. Snap-on is living off its name and selling tools on credit, they aren't the best and certainly not for the price.

Don't ignore Stanley just bc they are sold at Walmart. They make very good tools. I could tell you several stories about Stanley tools being good products.
Dewalt high priced tools are definitely better, but Craftsman is not. I have many tools from all 3 brands.

I'll rephrase that. Snap on is the best that anybody actually knows about. I've never heard of that other stuff.

I buy the shite out of harbor freight stuff. The harbor freight professional stuff is an extremely good value.
