Doesn't mean the raw materials are the same.

Snap-On or Matco.

I've heard several mechanics swear they'd never buy anything from snap-on again.

Proto....??

Most of the old domestic stuff has turned into Chinese (such as Dewalt) so cant trust anything now.
I still use Dewalt and Milwaukee. Proto I fine to be the best made but pretty expensive

Best value for the money (IMHO)-Tekton (Parent company makes Gearwrench also). The Taiwanese tools are very good for the money and higher quality than most Chinese equivalents. Shop around on amazon for a few socket and wrench sets to get him started.

Good advice here. Tekton and Gearwrench are all I buy now.

Snap-On brand hand tools would be my gift to a kid, nephew, or grandkid.

probably because their tool guy quit or stopped running their route and they needed some tools repaired or replaced. I get pissed when they do this as well but I just send my tools in and get refunded my shipping from Snap On and Matco.

Both tool manufacturers are interchangeable to me. BTW, Stanley Tools(Black & Decker) owns Craftsman.

Snap- On is it's own entity and Matco falls under the Danaher tools umbrella.

Everything you need to know about tools.

I've been buying Kobalt (Lowes brand) for awhile. They have the lifetime as well and I don't see Lowe's going away.

As of right now my cordless power tools are dewalt. I also like Milwaukee or Makita but my next set which I'll buy this fall will be rigid. They have a one handed sawzall that I like and they outdremel dremel. Also if I'm not mistaken their warranty is better than anyone else's.

Most of my personal tools are craftsman from several years back and I like them well enough. I've been using a bunch of snap on/proto stuff lately though and have become spoiled.

Not to mention a bunch of Starrett tools

No.

I used to work for Snap on and toured their plant in Wisconsin. They made sockets and pliers there. The difference in what they do and what Danaher/Craftsman does is night and day. And you pay for it. But it's one of the few things where the extra expense is worth it if you make your living with your tools or you just want tools you'll never have to replace.

Now they do have some cross branded stuff that's probably made out of country like Kobalt and some of the blue point stuff. But if you're buying snap on chrome... it's the best hand tools on the planet.

That's normally because of the tool truck guys. They own a franchise and can be dicks, especially when the mechanics get behind on their bill. That's one of the main reasons they're able to sell as expensive as they do. They finance.
