It's natural to have a bias against an inferior opponent, like the Iranians. But we should always remind ourselves, just because they have more limited means, doesn't mean they're not clever.

Jonathan Swift covered this very well in Gulliver’s Travels when Gulliver ends up in Laputa, where a floating island inhabited by theoreticians and academics oppresses the land below, called Balnibarbi. Forced to supply the floating island via ropes, and under threat of the island dropping on them, they eventually overturn the island by pulling on all the ropes on one side of the island. Thus, the technologically inferior overcome their betters.

The guide fleet out of Venice has nicer boats than the Iranian Navy. They would probably kick their arse as well.

This. We so easily forget the lessons we should have learned from the USS Cole. It doesn't take a destroyer to sink a destroyer. Those small, fast moving boats can easily carry a bomb capable of crippling our destroyers. There's no reason we should ever let then get close enough to deploy one.

Seems like one AR, and a box of bulk 5.56 could have sent these dudes packing. They aren’t really that scary.

How I would handle it... I would announce to the whole god damned world that if you come within 400 yards of a US navy vessel, YOU WILL BE SUNK.

The fact that I read this from here shows that it's no big deal. We weren't spun up or anything. But, in all honesty, this is the norm for Iranians. They drive as fast as they can towards us with their speed boats and machine guns mounted, then stop. If they see a carrier they know to stop at 500 feet. If not the helo drops right in front of them with dual gatlin guns ready to blast away. It's their way of trying to provoke us into an international conflict. It was mentioned in this thread before, but they know we won't do anything. Simple as that. And yes, currently in north Arabian Sea... It's hot af out here with nothing to do

How is smashing one of their boats into flinders going to cause an international incident? You know what the rest of the world would do if we did? They'd shrug their shoulders and say, "Looks like they deserved it."

Shhiiitt a few baws in a Freeman could pass one of those Sea Rays up, catch a few yellowfin, and then blow their arse out of the water on the way back in from the lump no problem.

I'm actually surprised that the escorting CG cutter didn't fire on the them. Or at least fire warning shots. At least in my experience once the boats got within the inner perimeter it was game on.
