How long have you been an adult?
Take this as a lesson. Trust but verify. Always.

Decent chance he didn’t remit your premium and pocketed it instead.
This.
My agent forgot to submit my homeowner's renewal one year. No mortgage so there was no one checking on it. I didn't find out until the next year when I called to renew. I thought he ripped me off at first until I figured out he never drafted my account. I had the email telling him to renew and his response saying it would be done. It was a funny phone call.
Him: Did you have any claims last year?
Me: Nope.
Him: Enjoy your savings.
Me: What would have happened if my house burned down?
Him: I would have been writing you a big check.

fricking insurance lapse charges are horse shite. There's nothing you can do to fight them.
I had a signed fricking document from the DMV saying I had already paid the bullshite arse fine and they still ended up making me pay it

New insurance with a different company is effective on the 12th.
No, I never had a lapse. He has admitted repeatedly it was his fault and he'll take care of it. My mistake was trusting him to take care of it.

I've lived in a lot of states, and a major penalty from the state for an insurance lapse has to be one of the dumbest fricking abuses of power I can think of.

Do you have documents or insurance cards from the actual insurance company showing you had coverage? Not the agent...the actual company the policy was through. If you have documents showing coverage, call the insurance company directly and ask them to provide a letter stating the date coverage began, that the policy is still active, and hasn't had any lapse in coverage since inception. Then take that letter to the DMV to get the issue cleared up.
The other possibility is that if you were paying the agent directly for the policy (as opposed to paying the carrier directly), that maybe the agent was pocketing the premium and didn't remit the payment to the insurer. I remember reading about a case a few years back that an agent got busted for running a ponzi scheme where he'd collect premium from a client and keep it instead of remitting to the insurance company. Then he'd eventually pay that policy with the next client's money and so on. If I remember correctly, the agent got busted when one of the insureds tried to file a claim and the carrier denied it because they didn't have a policy for that client because the agent hadn't submitted the application or premium to the company. In which case, you need to contact the Department of Insurance to file a complaint for possible fraud.

For future reference, you can buy auto insurance from Geico, Progressive, and probably many other companies from their websites. You don't need an insurance agent.

Happens all the time in Louisiana. Call your current carrier (not your agent) and get the form letter that they already have showing you have had continuous coverage. It’s literally the same thing your agent is going to have to do. (The DMV doesn’t want shite from your agent, they want it from your carrier).
