Because a ton of people have no idea what they're doing. You'd be surprised how many people I've talked to over the years who thought their hurricane deductible was a percentage of whatever their claim amount was. Or that thought their homeowners insurance would cover their ATV or boat.

Or say they have “full coverage” when they have state minimum liability limits with a ton of liquid assets exposed to unnecessary risk.

bullshite. You get notices of date of cancelation and dates coverage was binder by new insurance
You wanted to save money so you didn't pay the last month's premium with old carrier. They then, because you never paid balance, placed the cancelation backdated to the end of previous payment, causing you to have a lapse of coverage.

I was trying to make a long story short. The letter from the DMV says insurance canceled on 5/23/20. That's it. It says nothing about a lapse. The insurance company in question has already sent me a letter of experience, I had no lapse. The insurance company I'm with now can't find a record of a policy going back to 5/13/20, only to 7/09/21. I was definitely paying for auto insurance during that time, guaranteed. Finally got ahold of my agent who says, "It's an easy fix" but he hasn't fixed it. The guy did something, I don't know what, to mess something up. And yes I know I was covered during that missing year and a half.

If you have proof he was to switch you and didn’t, you can try to sue him for that amount. Of course you can tell him you will accept a check to keep it from going forward. His own insurance should cover this error in his professional duty as an agent. He will probably open a claim with thin if you make a claim.

Why is it so high?

Sounds like you were knowingly or unknowingly letting him shop you around every 6 months. You can request a prior insurance report and it will give you historical data around who you were with over the last ten years.

I never had a lapse in coverage. I still don't understand why anything was flagged at the DMV, but the insurance company says they'll have it cleared up by tomorrow, flags removed. We'll see, fingers crossed.

Too bad you can't just claim to be an illegal alien and not have to deal with any of this.

I had this same thing happen. You should be able to call the insurance company directly and ask to speak to underwriting/policy services. As long as you can find proof that there was no lapse, they will clear everything off. Or at least they did in my case. We switched companies when we added my daughter's vehicle and they uploaded the VIN incorrectly. Hope that helps!

Exactly! Like didn't the OP have an insurance card? Get bills from the actual insurance company? If you paid the company, you should be good. If you paid the agent? Why?

My mother in law is paying $200/month for car insurance and I shopped around for her and found $75/month. She likes her agent and is afraid the app will make it harder during a claim so she declined to switch

I had a letter of experience. You can't walk into the DMV with documentation anymore. If you have a flag, they give you a 1-800 number in Baton Rouge and tell you to keep trying until you get through.

2020 my agent calls saus he can get me a better rate with another company. I say great. Soon I start getting letters from DMV that I had an insurance lapse. I call my agent. He says don't worry, it was a clerical error, I'll fix it. Fast forward to 2024, I go to renew my license. I'm flagged to the tune of $1400.

So he collected money from you, and didn't pay? You would have noticed in 4 years if no money went out for insurance, if not you're an idiot.
What were you doing for proof of insurance all these years?
If you have paid no money in 4 years, enjoy your savings and just pay the 1400.

I've lived in a lot of states, and a major penalty from the state for an insurance lapse has to be one of the dumbest fricking abuses of power I can think of.

Well, my license expires tomorrow so I have to go pay about a $350 fine because of some bullshite that isn't even right.

Happy fricking birthday to me

If you don't get binder emailed to you on the same day that you made the change, then something is wrong. Did you get a binder?

Yes...in the mortgage/rip off industry it's referred to as "title insurance"...something you/the buyer PAYS to insure OTHER parties against their OWN errors/F-ups ! What a racket !

Seems odd that not having been issued a proof of isurance card (You haven't stated otherwise when asked multiple times) wasn't a red flag.

This isn't adding up.
