Haven’t spoken to my insurance agent in nearly 2 years. I shop my auto/HO insurance every other year and pay the bill online directly to the carrier.

Just pay it from the savings you had from the independent agent.

Trust a little, verify a lot.

We were about to have roof work done on our townhouse in the French Quarter and I asked for proof of workman's comp.
The guy gave me a xerox of his workman's comp insurance.

I called the company. They hadn't insured him for over a decade. He had altered the dates on his old proof and given me a xerox of that alteration.

Needless to say, we didn't use him.

Verify verify verify. Your net worth may depend on it.

The agent should make it right. All he has to do is give the DMV proof of when you canceled the previous policy and when the new one took effect. If it was 25 hours or more, you’re fricked but if it was done on the same day then there’s nothing to worry about.

Correct, but there’s a lot missing from this story

What's funny about it? It works. I saved a boatload last year by shopping car and homeowners. They count on you letting it slide and not shopping.

If you don't have anything in writing you can go ahead and just pay that $1,400 and move on because "I promise he told me over the phone" aint gunna fly in small claims court.

you truly never had a lapse, you wouldn't have a fine. OR the DMV/State screwed up and proof of coverage with no lapse would clear up the issue.

Don't assume the DMV is on top of it. I got a letter from them in my name for a car I bought 2 months before saying insurance lapsed and I had a fine. I never even had a policy at the carrier listed (previous owners policy I guess). I had coverage on the car all along on my policy. Get that sorted out. Then get one for my other car I bought new 5 yrs ago and saying it lapsed. DMV said the computer dies that sometimes.

Pretty sure the car insurance paid on the bodily injury/medical part.

What’s funny is you think insurance rates are controlled by agents and are somehow negotiable.

the ignorance entertains me, but what is really funny is this mindset of getting one over on the agent. I can assure you no one is losing sleep over you switching to save a few bucks.

Why does anyone still use an actual agent? Just look for quotes online from all the major providers and handle everything from their app.

Turns out a lot of people still like dealing with the same person, in person while also having accessibility via a website or mobile app. Who knew?

they have errors and omissions insurance for such an issue, but I'm willing to bet they would rather pay out of pocket to fix it legally and ethically than to make a claim.
Not necessarily a good idea because then if the other party ends up demanding more money than either your E&O deductible or what you were willing to pay out of pocket and you end up having to get your E&O carrier involved, they may deny coverage because you probably violated the terms of your E&O policy by admitting fault and attempting to negotiate your own settlement.

It’s a much easier fix that will most likely involve very minimal fees and in the past has been paid directly by the carrier, but again we get one side of the story and everyone’s first inclination is to sue. Go figure.

For future reference, you can buy auto insurance from Geico, Progressive, and probably many other companies from their websites. You don't need an insurance agent.

Unless its commercial auto a lot of times its better to go the broker/agent route with those.

The largest auto insurance company in the US is agent based. Most people purchasing online have zero clue what they are even buying

Because a ton of people have no idea what they're doing. You'd be surprised how many people I've talked to over the years who thought their hurricane deductible was a percentage of whatever their claim amount was. Or that thought their homeowners insurance would cover their ATV or boat.
