There's a reason City produce on Airline and Plank, one if not the oldest produce stand in BR went out of business and Tony's seafood is still alive and kicking.
EBT.
The people in the area would rather spend their free money on Skrimps and King Crab legs than lettuce, tomatoes and carrots.

"Food Oasis" and "food desert" are just high-minded sounding terms that basically just denote an area with so much violent crime and theft that no food stores (other than maybe a well-armored convenience store) will open up there.
To be fair, Food desert is an accurate term for rural areas and suburb communities that has very limited options for grocery stores and restaurants.
Example: Prairieville for a very long time was a food desert to the point where residents had to drive to Gonzales or Siegen lane to get their groceries and eat out.
With that said, SWB is full of shite here and I hope she loses her arse on whatever endeavor she's working on.

Just because there is fresh food / veggies available, doesn't mean it will get purchased.
The Walmart in Chalmette gets a lot of EBT traffic. Obviously they have tons of fresh food available. The buggies are full of frozen and boxed processed foods.
Try going there after about 7 pm... so many store shelves and freezer sections EVERY NIGHT are empty... tons of fruit and veggies and fresh meat are available.

Is Bill Bynum getting a nice salary, or is he doing God's work?

Google "corporate welfare," then google "big oil companies in Louisiana destroy coastline and don't pay for it," then perhaps dole out some of your moral outrage in those directions.

They dont want fresh food. They have what they want. How many chick shacks and pay day loan companies do you see in south baton rouge?

WBRZ 2016
80’s & early 90’s I went to this Hi-Nabor with my grandma, we drove from Central

One man has been arrested after he looted a Hi-Nabor store during the August flood.
The video showed one of the suspects, later identified as 21-year-old Clarence Duncan, wading through the water to the front doors of the store, breaking the glass with a hammer and entering. The video showed Duncan making several trips in and out of the store carrying alcohol, beer, cigarettes and other items.

Most people in those communities have the ability to drive to a supermarket, even if it is a bit of a drive away.
The common food desert definition involves those who shop at the corner store, because they can't get to a real grocery store without a car, and even if there is a bus route available, you can only carry so many bags on the bus.
