Instead of worrying about SG some of you BR guys should worry about stuff like this

Mayor Sharon Weston Broome’s administration will launch a new initiative in November aimed at increasing access to fresh foods in underserved neighborhoods in East Baton Rouge Parish.
But maybe it doesn't matter. EBR is flush with cash and there are no bigger issues to deal with.

The $1.8 million contract with Hope is paid through $750,000 from the city-parish’s general fund, $750,000 from Community Development Block Grant funds and $300,000 from the mayor’s Healthy Baton Rouge program.
Food Oasis??
While we argue about the merits of SG and annexation, Broome allocates our tax dollars to her pet projects.

Maybe there wouldn’t be “food desert” issues if people hadn’t chased out National, Superfresh, Real Super Store, etc.

They are going to put a Whole Foods at Plank and Hollywood

Seriously. I had a friend who managed grocery stores, and the shortage of the stores in the poorer neighborhoods was off the charts.

"Food Oasis" and "food desert" are just high-minded sounding terms that basically just denote an area with so much violent crime and theft that no food stores (other than maybe a well-armored convenience store) will open up there. Instead of focusing on the violent crime and theft keeping those stores out, they try to blame their absence as a cause of the violent crime and theft.

Price of a head of lettuce: $350.00

I, personally, like having to ask for a Hershey bar through a small plexiglass window covered by burglar bars.

Do you blame them? People open businesses to make money. Imagine opening up a nice grocery store on plank road. You’d spend more time tallying up stolen items then you would make a profit.

Whole Foods even accept EBT? 90% of those people are definitely on food stamps making less than $20K/year.

The grocery business is already very low margins as it is
quote:
Generally, profit margins are between 1 percent and 3 percent, depending on the item. It's not unusual for a grocery store to make just a few cents per item.
Add in theft and it makes no sense to stay open in some areas.

I think trying to provide healthy, fresh and more nutritious foods to underserved area would be a good thing with the current health crisis in the country and in those kind of communities.

Doesn’t she realize if there was a demand for fresh produce, someone would fill the market void?
Guess what? Processed crap and junk food are the order of the day with the EBT and LA purchase cards

The unions chased out National the Real Super Store. Super Fresh (formerly A & P) went belly-up nationwide. Your point would have been valid had use used Piggly Wiggly, particularly the one located on Florida at North Donmoor and the one in Delmont Village. Shoplifters stole them blind to the point they ended up closing. The one one Burbank didn't last long once the Gardere area turned Section 8.

I know every time I see residents of NBR perusing the aisles of Sam’s with their free food cards, they’re always loading up the cart with fresh and healthy food items. This plan is great and I applaud the mayor for allocating resources towards it. There will be less fried food and fatties in the hood. Maybe some pop up veggie parties serving lean meats that aren’t fried will happen and we can all live happily side by side. Alton would have wanted it this way.

Has she given any money to non-black owned companies? Her racism knows no bounds.

My point is that NBR has been a hostile business environment between regular issues like pilferage and organized union efforts to picked supermarkets to the point where they say “frick this shite” and leave.
The supermarket at Plank and Harding bear the airport had been a number of different brands but it closed down at least once due to pickets. And saying it was unions doesn’t change that the union was comprised of people from NBR. SBR wasn’t driving out to the ghetto to picket a supermarket.
