Listening to ESPN Radio, they played a sound bite where Ryan Clark said fans shouldn’t be over critical of players bc they “Put their lives on the line to play the game”.

What happened to the Bills player is sad, but put life on the line to voluntarily play a game for other’s entertainment for an enormous salary is going a bit far.

Yeah, that's silly. But, there is a lot of emotion involved, and this is the kind of thing that comes out of it.

The big thread on this topic is the textbook definition of threads to avoid like the plague.

Yes the takes are difficult to read. Within 30mins the opinions were all over the place.

I mean, let's be honest, people choose to become soldiers, police, firefighters, etc.

Every profession is voluntarily chosen.

But I completely agree with what you are trying to say here. Football is a dangerous game, but it's not even remotely comparable to any of those professions. Football players aren't "putting their lives on the line" anymore so than someone is driving to work every day.

Understood but unfortunately society seems to like to make decisions based on emotion lately. I would be willing to bet an electrician is much more “putting his life on the line” to do his job than a NFL football player is and at the end of the day society actually needs electricians.

Agree but society would be greatly impacted if people chose NOT to do the jobs listed above. NFL is purely entertainment. If that went away, people would just find something else to entertain themselves.

24 hour news coverage is not always best for the masses to absorb.

Agree 100%. I was just simply making the point that the fact that it's voluntary is irrelevant. And my comparison to driving to work isn't 100% on, either, but it's more comparable to that than truly dangerous jobs like those.

Pretty sure if some baw almost died and was in critical condition from the job site, the reaction would be the same.

Work would prob be shut down for the day and every baw, manager, and union guy would be reacting the same way. They just don’t have the public platform of celebrities.

The only thing making me cringe was the guy on Mad Dog Sports this morning saying going through Covid helped us deal with events like this better.

That dude had no business on air for that long. This guy and Van Pelt were on for a couple hours. With little script if any.

Clark had just referred to “life on the line” and “going to battle/war” and “I’d die for this” as cliches.

I’d stopped watching so I did not hear the rest. But they had already begun to talk in circles. And I’m sure all the while they are checking and ESPN is checking the socials media machine to see how a sentence might be problematic.

I remember Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw sounding foolish during Tienanmen Square. Constant coverage and running out of shite to say always happens. Even with trained journalists much less a jock.

In the sense the job stopped to figure out what happened and allow the coworkers to mourn, I’m sure it would be and rightfully so.

Most athletes have an overinflated sense of their own importance. Firefighters, the military, police, truck drivers, electricians, farmers, construction workers, etc., etc., all put their lives on the line everyday, for far less money and accolades.

You do know that soldiers don't get to quit when a brother/sister gets KIA don't you. That is why I hate when theses dumb arse announcers and athletes compare themselves to warriors going to battle. They play a game, the other is life or death. All repect to Vets and Active Duty.

Driving on the interstate is probably 1000x more dangerous than the NFL
