NEW DELHI: “R-73 selected,” was the last radio transmission of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman from his MiG-21 “Bison” fighter jet. He then let loose the Vympel R-73 air-to-air missile at the Pakistani F-16 fighter in his cross-hairs before he himself was shot down.

The high-altitude dogfight between supersonic Indian and Pakistani fighters, after the latter breached Indian airspace west of Rajouri in Sunderbani area around 10 am on February 27, transfixed the nation. The dogfight ended with Varthaman in Pakistan’s custody after parachuting down in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Varthaman was among the six MiG-21 pilots who scrambled from Srinagar, apart from Sukhoi-30MKIs, Mirage-2000s and MiG-29s being deployed from other airbases, to intercept the Pakistani fighters. “We knew they would react after our Balakot strikes, but did not expect them to retaliate so soon,” said an officer.

The rival fighters were soon chasing each other in the ensuing dogfight, with the entire air battle lasting for around 15 minutes from beginning to finish. Varthaman in his MiG-21, which has a design vintage of the 1960s, managed to “lock on” to a much more modern Pakistani F-16. At such close-quarters, the short-ranger R-73 missile is preferred over the longer range RVV-AE medium-range air-to-air missiles also carried by MiG-21s.

“The R-73 is better in such a melee. This is probably the first time a Russian-origin MiG-21 has shot down an American F-16 anywhere in the world,” said another officer.

How the frick does a 1960s Cold War era Russian fighter manage to shoot down a modern F-16 in a dogfight? I don’t get it.

Most likely due to the F-16’s pilot.

Side note: I wish we didn’t give aid like this to Pakistan.

This is pretty much exactly the thought i have when i play golf and i see someone get super pissed about a super fancy new driver or other club they just got after a bad shot with that club.

I usually chuckle because it’s not the clubs fault. The club did exact what it is supposed to do.

The person holding club is why the shot sucked.

It’s important to note few things

1. The F-16 was designed in the 70’s. It’s not like that airframe design is much newer than the MiG-21

2. F-16 is NOT an air superiority fighter. It’s a multi role aircraft

3. F-16 has beaten the F-35 in simulated dogfights. Put the right pilot in the cockpit and it can hold its own against anyone

4. In modern dogfights, the side with either AWACS or groundbased radar assistance wins 9/10 times. I’m willing to bet the Indian side steered their mig in behind the F-16 undetected giving the MiG-21 a huge tactical advantage.

Not sure if anyone will catch the double meaning in my post, the Nato designation for the R73 that took down the F-16 is AA-11 Archer.

Accounts of the dogfight are sketchy but my guess is the MiG-21's pilot took advantage of superior attitude and "unusually close proximity" and used solid technique to gain a lock on the F-16. One thing about these early encounters that turn hot is planes often get much closer than they ever would in an already shooting war. The closer they are when the actual fight starts the lower the current generations fighter's advantage is. In a true hot war the F-16 would likely have taken out the MiG before the MiG even knew the F-16 was there, at least without AWAC support. While current generation fighters are still capable of close air combat they are designed to neutralize the enemy at long standoff ranges.

Paki shoulda put on the brakes, and the Mig would flown right by.

Hard deck, my arse.

Paki now flying cargo planes full of rubber dog shite out of Hong Kong.

Speaking of which, was the world demand for rubber dog shite so high that they were ever "flown" in large quantities to a customer/distributor? I would have expected via container ship.

US still flies all kinds of planes from that era, C 130 for example first flew in the 1950s and is still readily used. They just have a lot of updates. Same with these planes, USA still uses F16s.

It is funny though. But I’m sure the MiG-21 was not the same as they were in Vietnam.

As long as we're making money off the deal, I don't see the problem.

This.

sell the weapons with degraded avionics. While it looks like a front line fighter it’s missing the brains that make it so good.
