Side note: I wish we didn’t give aid like this to Pakistan.

That’s one mistake the GOP has to own.

Also I am sure that the F-16's we sold them were 1st generation model's which was first built in the mid 70's.

When I was in the AirForce, our squadron sold some of our F-15C's to Saudi. We basically took everything out of them. The advanced radar etc.

While we sell our model planes, we usually keep the technology.

However, F-16s suck. F15 is the air to air king.

Those MiG-21 Bisons aren’t terrible. Definitely not the same as the extremely old MiG-21s. These have upgraded avionics and sensors, and they’re carrying very capable missiles.

ETA: but really, even then, that doesn’t matter when there’s little to no situational awareness from the pilots whether that be due to lack of sensors, lack of pilot skill, lack of ground control radar, or a lack of AWACS.

So while Pakistan has F-16s that U.S. pilots have had success in, they don’t have the U.S. pilots or anything else (probably, cba to check) that is required to make a comprehensive and lethal Air Force (advanced sensors, highly trained and ready personnel, and the ability to control the EW airspace)

it comes down to who is the better pilot, a good pilot in an old plane can easily out fly an average pilot in a new plane

guy who got shot down wasnt very good is all, or, he was caught completely off guard

Someone has to keep the "defense" contractors loaded. They can't survive on our trillions of tax dollars alone.

I remember reading an article in "Flying" magazine in the 1980's about Air National Guard pilots flying Vietnam-era F-4s winning aerial combat competitions against Air Force regulars flying F-16s. The conclusion was that most of the ANG pilots had combat experience in 'Nam (in the F-4), while the Regulars had little-to-no combat experience in any platform. Experience matters. Korean War jet jockeys knew they were up against Soviet pilots as opposed to NOKO or Chinese pilots because the former would engage, while the latter would turn tail and run.

seen lots of that type of schooling, many 4 v. 1 (Viper/Phantom} knife fights where the old F-4 driver would take all four

Even at the beginning of WW2, the lowly Brewster Buffalo scored kills against the far superior Mitsubishi A6M.
