Exactly. And as others have said, the F-16 the Pakistani was flying isn’t exactly what most would consider a “modern” fighter. The MiG-21 isn’t that much older than the F-16. Factor in pilot skill and it’s no surprise how this dogfight turned out.

I remember reading an article in "Flying" magazine in the 1980's about Air National Guard pilots flying Vietnam-era F-4s winning aerial combat competitions against Air Force regulars flying F-16s. The conclusion was that most of the ANG pilots had combat experience in 'Nam (in the F-4), while the Regulars had little-to-no combat experience in any platform. Experience matters. Korean War jet jockeys knew they were up against Soviet pilots as opposed to NOKO or Chinese pilots because the former would engage, while the latter would turn tail and run.

I agree, experience matters....also not relying on missiles so much.....gotta out fly the other pilot

You’re correct. This particular one was flown by LT. Teo Nibel of JG.54. He was shot down over Wemmel, Belgium on Jan. 1 1945 during Operation Bodenplatte.

Good job, sir! I have a few in the stash. Going to do the obvious Yellow 10 if I can find the -13 conversion. I built a D-9 but in a different livery. Its at the house. Got others?

The guy's in the Phantoms also bought "fuzz buster" car radar detectors at the base PX, and mounted one facing forward and one facing rear in the cockpit. It gave them warning of when they were "painted" by the F16's radar, giving them a extra edge. Countering a multi million dollar avionics platform with a 100 dollar radar detector.

Viper guys were doing that at Red Flag back in the 80s, tried some unrealistic tactics to gain an advantage, didn't last very long

3. F-16 has beaten the F-35 in simulated dogfights. Put the right pilot in the cockpit and it can hold its own against anyone

Not to derail but that was one time and it was because pilots were flying the F35 like an F16/15/18 etc and not how it’s intended to be flown.

The F-35 doesn’t/can’t dogfight.

I imagine reloading those muskets in flight was a bit of a hassle.
