IMO life in this country doesn’t pencil unless you really make an effort to buy equities.

Basic arrangement for the middle class is you get fricked on everything. Big corporations can do whatever they want and everything keeps getting more and more expensive year after year. Middle class people have no shot to get ahead unless you have a stake in the corporations that are doing the fricking. My advice for my fellow wage cucks is this, avoid consumer debt and sacrifice everything you can to buy low cost ETFs tied to the big indexes.

Simple formula that has worked for me.

I get what you're saying, but I'm investment stoooooopid and just put all my money into the good ol' company matching 401K.
I'm finally getting to a point where I have some surplus to invest in other areas.
What is an ETF, and how do I invest?

Dump most of your money in VOO with maybe 20% in VMFXX
Then sit back and relax

I have been automatically purchasing VOO and VOOG every paycheck for about 3 years now. It’s been good so far.

Solid advice minus the anti corporate, class warfare ranting.
It's never been easier or cheaper for average people to access the market and information necessary to invest wisely and make smart financial decisions. No other system or time in human history has presented the typical person more opportunity to build wealth and live an extremely comfortable lifestyle.

The longer I live the more I believe the middle class F’d itself by trying so hard to keep up with the Joneses.
Yes, a lot of things are more expensive than they were in 1980…new cars, college education, home prices.
But the standards are so, so much higher now. People don’t like to let their kids drive beaters anymore. When I was a teen, you were lucky to get a shitty S-10 or your grandpa’s old farm truck that didn’t like to start.
In terms of houses today, nobody wants to live in a fixer-upper, share a bathroom, or deal with anything less than a huge walk-in closet and the latest trends in everything. But looking back, the room I grew up in didn’t even have a closet. We got one pair of shoes per year (the cheapest Nikes or something IF you were lucky) and we’d better take care of them because that was all we were getting. And we all shared one bathroom. This wasn’t that long ago. And my parents did well by the standards of the area I grew up in.
TL/DR although some things have become more expensive, our definition of “middle class” has changed dramatically over the years.

I'll never forget how much grifter Gary V was obsessed with the NFT movement

First, do you know what you're invested in inside the 401k? That's just an account where you can hold various types of investment assets.
ETF is just a mutual fund that trades through out the day more like a stock and has some tax efficiency advantages if held in taxable brokerage account vs a mutual fund.

This has been my parents strategy since the early 70s and mine since the late 90s. Yep it works.
I like index funds. They are for those like me who don’t have the knowledge or desire to track stocks and pick winners. Just have the money taken out of my check and let it ride for 30-40 years.

True. If you aren’t invested in the stock market, you won’t get anywhere. Inflation will eat you up.
