Two Bros from Texas started companies. Their Dad was an entrepreneur. One wanted to make cool rods and reels. One wanted to make completely customized fishing boats that required no outside accessories.
Each accessory was looked at to determine failure points and then "over engineered," allegedly so replacement parts wouldn't have to be bought often.
The initial concept for the boat was that the ice chest could be utilized to site cast for fish, etc. Bro who was designing the boats with the boat company found a method overseas to create a much stronger, more durable and longer lasting ice chest to allow for the site casting use case.
It's called rotational molding or rotomold. Got a little carried away designing the ice chest and realized the fishing boat idea wasn't worth it. Bro with the reel company joined up. Gave the ice chest a whirl and they used a marketing company that was smart and focused it on the "boat and bullet," crowd.
Unlike Igloo or Coleman etc, they threw in a hat, t-shirts and stickers with every purchase of a product, and also gave the retailers a huge cut of the price of the products they moved, incentivizing product placement in the process.
They had a product unlike many if not all on the market, they built marketing around a niche they thought they could appeal to, and gave retailers every reason to push it. In the process they built a huge brand within that subculture. Not hipsters as was previously alluded to.
In essence, just like many tech companies, they started out doing one thing, failed forward realizing that one aspect of the failure had potential, and then pivoted towards it and with great marketing and brand building skill, they crushed the competition.
I think they went from $29 million in sales in 2011 to $425 or so million last year. I was at a fishing tournament talking to a guy in Grand Isle over the weekend who said he'd heard their manufacturing and wharehousing backlog over the Holiday quarter last year cost them $100 million. So whether you like it or dissuade it, the money the company is making is very real and their product-products now-is selling like nothing before it.
In the process, they've diversified to make their Tumblers, koozies, soft packs, actual open tubs to hold drinks, bottle openers, ice packs, etc.
They're laughing right along with all of the cynics in this thread. Except that they keep walking and chuckling on the way to the bank.
People laud tech companies for things like pivoting, failing forward, building brand awareness, maximizing product margins, slick marketing and diversifying product lines. With this company for some reason people love to scoff.
Does CAD need a smart wristwatch? Does anyone need a Wifi Thermostat? Does anyone need a Yeti? Of course not. But wearable tech, smart home devices and lux brand rotomolded outdoor lifestyle brands make BILLIONS anyway.
Disclaimer: I own 4 YETI Products - A 32 oz Tumbler, the 10 oz Tumbler, their stainless Koozie and a 75qt purple and gold Tundra model.
The Tumbler, Koozie and the Tundra were either gifts or won in contests. I simply would not pay the premium they ask. But ignoring the many millions of people who have or dismissing them as a company is dumb.

This always cracks me up.
I've got 3 of 'em and they work well.
I've also got a $1000 that says it will have way more ice in it on Sunday morning after my tailgate than anybody's 30 year old Coleman.

I actually left a customized link here on the OT back in 2011 or so that allowed people to sign up for a contest to win a 75 quart YETI Purple And Gold ice chest from Stines. There was a contest to award one to a random winner but also another to the guy who signed the most people up through their link.
So Lester in a sense you and your other dumbfrick posters helped me win a $500 ice chest for free.

Coolers have gotten way better now, but when I bought my first Yeti, I didn't see anyone else selling coolers like that.
Your newer Coleman may keep ice as well, just don't stand or sit on it. Get ready to replace the crappy handles, but at least the kit is only $10 on Amazon.
