Shop welders make $15-20/hr probably. The guys that make $75-85/hr own their own rig truck, welder, equipment. But it’s typically a gig that requires traveling, living in an RV.

Shop welders make way more than that now. A welder for Turner, or any other maintenance company at a plant, makes upwards of $40 an hour.

I sweat too much to weld. I went through the whole process learning and such and just drip sweat all over the place. Not that I couldn't do it I guess, I could never want to weld for money.

Not sure why you think electrician is safer than welding, I use to be an electrician at a plant. It’s quite dangerous, more dangerous than welding.

At the Industrial level, I would totally agree. I worked in plants as a fitters helper and later a fitter in summers going thru college. That shite wasn't a breeze, but electrical was a different level.

That said, an electrician has the option of going residential or commercial with a lot more opportunities to advance.

Welding gets thrown around here a lot but there's a skill within the skill. I've worked with some crappy welders. They knew how to weld but they sucked.

Like someone mentioned, it is an art and plenty of people just can't do it

I know someone that this very same move. Stupid move IMO, you have a degree. Go to school to be a operator or their a tons of directions you can go, that will be a ton easier.

There are other trades that you can train for that will make you more money in the long term in a safer work environment

Welding is probably safer than being a teacher in EBR.

Would like to know the pros and cons of being a welder in Louisiana. Will there always be work available? What kind of pay scale is there for someone starting out and down the road if you're good? Just anything worth mentioning.

I'm an Ops Manager for a Pipeline Construction Company based out of Louisiana. Although I don't really care much for welders (they are mostly prima donna spoiled arseholes), I have to deal with them every day. If you are a good welder, you will pretty much always stay busy and if it gets slow, lots of them will fall back and inspect. Yes, they make good money. Our Welder Foremen make more than me when they work a bunch of hours. But, they work in some nasty mud holes that Pipeliners call bell holes and making a tie-in weld when it's 100 degrees in that brutal Louisiana Summer will have you begging for the inside of a clasroom no telling how bad those kids act up.

HVAC

This.

I have a friend that got into trouble with cocaine in the Navy and did some time.

He came back home and went to work for a commercial HVAC company in Baton Rouge.

Does side jobs on the weekend for residential issues. Gets to use the company truck and only pays cost for materials. Passes retail cost onto customers who gladly pay for his time to fix things after hours or on short notice.

He isn’t hurting for money and enjoys the work.

In all honesty, have you thought about becoming a welding instructor? Learn to weld and then teach it.

Honest trade and you'll make a hell of a lot more money. Steady work as well. Thought about plant work? Meaning the operations side of things. Put your resume together and apply EVERYWHERE to try and get your foot in the door. My military and LE experience helped me slide thru the cracks. Had ZERO experience otherwise. Now, I wish I would've done it 18 years ago. Just don't get discouraged w/rejection. APPLY APPLY APPLY.

Probably better than teaching. Working with a contractor usually means less pay and benefits.

If I was starting over, Id look into electrical and instrument work.

I don’t know anything about welding, but I’ve been thinking about teaching. You’ve talked me out of it.

I thought about it my younger days. Don't like working outside in the blazing louisiana heat. I asked myself why would I pursue the hottest job in La. I passed. Think about this very seriously.

If you have a college degree you don’t want to think about what trade you’d like best working daily, you need to think about what trade company you’d like best owning and managing. Seriously, you don’t want to be getting your hands dirty in a trade on a daily basis when you are 40 or 50 unless you have no other abilities.

Work hard in a trade during your 20s and maybe most of your 30s before starting your own business.

The more educated folks you deal with the better as an owner, I can promise you that.
