All human civilization since the beginning of humans doing civilization things has centered on the nuclear family unit of two parents raising children together in some form of the institution of marriage.

So yes, there is a point.

I don't object to the idea of marriage.

I object to the idea that we must involve the government with that marriage.

Christian troll? Ok I'll play along.

Christ has as much impact on my marriage as the Easter Bunny and Santa Clause.

Seriously though, I can appreciate a marriage that the people within believe is stronger because of their faith. Personally, I just think neither I nor most people need it.

Fwiw I see way more Christians getting divorced that I see atheists but that's most people I know are Christians or at least claim to be. And a lot of the ones that aren't getting divorced stay in a miserable marriages because divorce is frowned upon by the church. So the husband will continue to be a drunk louse while the wife continues to bang the pool boy, both knowing that everything will be made better by saying a few Hail Marys at mass.

I’m Christian and I don’t see any reason for it

All serious studies looking at outcomes for children support the notion that having two functional parents in the same house is the single biggest differentiator between success and failure for children.

Reading to a child every day from infancy might be even stronger than the 2-parent factor but both are so critical for child development.

Marriage is not a religious thing, its a legal thing,

Historically, at least in Western Civilization as we know it, this was not the case until very recently. Marriage was the purview of the Church. Only in the last couple centuries has the concept of the state having any say-so in marriage taken root. And only in the last half of the 20th century has the notion that the state can supersede the Church when it comes marriage taken hold.

quote:

Which is why gay marriage should stand.

This is what opened Pandora’s box. This overturned thousands of years of the concept of marriage, not only in the Western World, but in all of human history. For the first time I’m history a group could marry based on not a man and woman joining together with the intent to start a family. Now people could marry based on homosexual fetishism.

And this set a very important precedent. If marriage is no longer the Union of a male & female for the purpose of starting a family, then what is it exactly? What limits can there be on it? And what are those limits founded on?

You’re getting lots of answers but everybody is missing the point.

You’re right. All the family stuff can be accomplished just the same whether or not you are married.

This may well be the most incorrect thing ever posted in tigerdroppings.

Removing God from marriage is one of the evil plans of the devil. The plan of absolute evil is removing God from all aspects of life. This is why we are in the shape we are in as humanity. Without God, there can be no good in the world. All good emanates from God.

Men who are married are significantly less likely to commit suicide. There are also a dozen or so other benefits for children raised in dual parent households versus single parent.

Me and my wife got married because we wanted to have children and marriage produces better outcomes for children.

Pretty simple and nothing to do with religion.

The point of marriage is to give yourself completely to the other person as a gift of yourself. In marriage this gift of yourself complete and holding nothing back is geared towards producing children and the raising of those children. This is why it is for men and women only, because only man and woman can produce a child.

This is what keeps society going. Everything in this culture that has been done to change this has led to societal problems and the breakdown in the family which cause more societal problems.
