The point is that slapping some sensible wisdom on Jesus doesn’t give credibility to all the elaborate claims associated with him.

Yet again for those in the back, what morals are you using to define and judge “sensible wisdom?” It’s probably Christian morals.

quote:

Muhammad? Joseph Smith? Do you think their claims are legitimate because they are historical?

Of course not. But Jesus’s claims are unique: unlike every other religion/prophet that offered to show the way to god, Jesus claimed he is God. No one has done that before or since.

I have done my research, and no, I don’t believe divine beings and prophets performed epic miracles in the Middle East thousands of years ago.

May I ask why?

I’m aware of similar ideas but not “treat others as you would like to be treated.”

Per Britannica variations go back to the 5th or 6th century BCE.

but at the end of the day, even if it not real, I'd rather live my life according to Jesus' teachings and upholding those good morals, values, and virtues.

Most paradoxical thing I’ve read

If it isn’t real, then what would have been the point of adhering to such a moral code? Good karma?

The whole point of Christianity is to live a moral life so that you’ll be rewarded with a pleasant afterlife. That’s why nearly all Christians believe it in the first place.

I acknowledged variations. The golden rule does not predate Jesus.

Incorrect.

The point of Christianity is that God creates every single human being in his image, and he loves each one so much that he chose to live and die as a human to redeem us from original sin and allow the opportunity for everlasting life to those who believe in Jesus.

When you truly have faith in that, you obey out of love for him, not the promise of better circumstances or eternal bliss.

You are using a term from the 1600s to describe something in the Bible that was a basic tenet of multiple societies for millennia.

Yours is a distinction without a difference.

Lol I’m not relying on the term “the golden rule”

I think there is a huge difference between the negative “do not do to others what you wouldn’t want done to you” and the positive “do to others what you would want done to you”

The negative and other variations existed before. The positive did not.

Ah, the old silver vs golden rule discussion. The problem is that the positive did exist both in Confucius' teachings as well as the Torah.

living by Pascal's Wager seems like an empty way to live your life. "I don't really believe in any of this, but I'll spend countless hours pretending just in case.
Not only empty but a waste of time.

And Pascal’s Wager is especially pointless when applied to Christianity because belief is not a switch you can flip out of self-interest. You cannot force yourself to have faith simply because the potential consequences make it a safer bet.

And according to Christianity, God is all-knowing and genuine faith matters. So what exactly is being wagered? You cannot fool an omniscient God by attending church, reciting prayers, and pretending to believe as an insurance policy. He would know you were only going through the motions to avoid punishment.

Pascal’s Wager treats the idiotic suggestion that you can game a system ruled by an omniscient being who cannot be deceived as some profound philosophical insight worthy of serious consideration.

It is an outright insult to anyone capable of basic logic.

Pascal’s Wager is little more than a rhetorical device for silencing questioning believers and impressing the credulous, and anyone deploying it in an argument would be wise to consider the audience before presenting it.

If you live according to Christs teachings and Heaven and Hell as afterlife consequences dont exist then it wouldnt really matter because you would have effectively created Heaven for yourself and those closest to you on earth. So Heaven would in fact exist just not in the way we have conceptualized it. “On earth as it is in Heaven.” Maybe Heaven is more of a concept than an actual place… that would actually make more sense

I genuinely think it’s silly that people think a sky man sent his physical kid to earth. I think it’s silly that Jews obsess over Kosher and no work sabbath or whatever. I also think it’s silly that Muslims think killing innocents will get them paradise.
Moral of the story, it’s all silly. So I find my purpose in what matters on this earth…. Raising a family and being a good man who will fight to protect those I care for. When the lights go out, nothing will matter except what you leave here.

If you do not believe the proof we’ve been given, no proof given will convince you.

No. It all remains the same. If there is one or the other you will go where you belong. If there’s not, you will just rot in a grave. For me the meaning in my life is to live it to the fullest with my wife and enjoy every minute that I can because beyond that who really knows for fact what happens when you die?

1. Jesus has a lot of things in common with other religious and mythological figures.

2. I guess because things like the Force, Kryptonite, and magical slippers are unique that they are real.

What difference does it make if something is unique in concept? People dream up new things all the time.

The same reason I don’t believe in Bigfoot, ghosts, alien visitations, reincarnation, ESP, etc. There’s no compelling evidence for such things.

No such thing as a good person.

Every human is flawed.
