That's for the most part a false dilemma .Or at least an incorrect summation of our situation. How about we adapt as facts become available as Americans do in a time of crisis?
That said, The Ruling Class has already spoken. The path ahead is clear. Quarantine, closures, payments etc is what we will do.

I think it is probably an overreaction, but I recognize I'm not really qualified to make that determination. Thus, I'm left following the advice of experts in the field of infectious disease and virology.

On the other side you have those who see the measures being taken as an overreaction that is destroying the economy and costing too many people their jobs and business. Sacrificing a few unhealthy elderly is acceptable damage to save the economic health of the nation.

Exactly. I'd give it three weeks but no longer. After that, exercise whatever reasonable precautions are possible (no big crowds, etc) but get back to work and life. Yes, there will be deaths, but the alternative is much worse.

Hard short term lockdown to stall community spread to the extent possible; then open back up nationwide combined with universal testing. Local quarantines as needed to control hotspots. It's simply unfeasible to shut down the country for more than a few weeks.

And the problem is that we'll only know if we DIDN'T do enough this time around, not if we did too much.
So now, if this works and curtails the impact, a shut down and tanking the economy will be the SOP for the next time something like this comes around.

It is better to be prepared and ready than to ignore the issue which could be out of hand. This is an unknown virus and you absolutely have to take it seriously. I'm happy the Trump administration is tackling this issue when it was early unlike our previous president.

Right and that's an even bigger concern. This reaction so far is the floor for the next time. No one will take a chance and do less. Instead they'll overreact and do more. Bad precedent being set right now. Thanks politicians.

I can’t see my family, I have to wear full garb for a majority of my day and my boss is Latoya. Enjoy your days off, and if you don’t have enough money to make it, try saving better next time.
