The same thing happened with my oldest son. One of the bittersweet parts of MLK day is that it’s often the first time that children consider that people could be treated differently because of skin color. It’s important we teach about the past, so I’m glad the day exists. It’s just sad to see that part of their innocence shattered.

Tell your son he has white privilege.

I'm not exposing my daughter to the divisiveness of race relations until she starts asking specific questions about it.

The problem, is we have one party that uses race for everything; it’s where they go every time they don’t have an answer, which is every day. They don’t judge or rule by the content of character, they implicitly use the race angle to divide and conquer. We live with people that are truly evil, and have found a way to use King’s legacy to destroy America from within. It saddens me to listen to his awesome speech, knowing the legacy of what was to come…..

There are many reasons to judge a person. Race shouldn't inherently be one of them.
Somebody should have gotten this point across more effectively to Dr. King and many of our societal leaders today.

MLK knew his end was coming, and stood there and said what he needed to say, fight the fight he felt compelled to fight
man had character and balls
man had character and balls

MLK had the right ideals.
It's not his fault the FBI had him killed.

That is exactly why we showed him the speech ourselves. We explained the meaning without the modern spin.

He hated white people as much as the next race activist did in those days he just wasn't as up front about it like Malcolm X was.
Same thing we have today with folks like Hakeem Jeffries, AOC, James Clyburn, etc.

That speech truly is one of the most important ones given in American history and we would be a much better country/civilization if we focused on living a world described in it rather than the post-post-racial mess we are currently in.
There is a constant struggle between progressive idealism and conservative realism. The world needs both to balance. MLK had progressive ideas, the process worked and laws were changed.
Where one side of the argument fails is thinking they can govern how people think. In reality, the harder you try, the harder they resist.
I hate to break it to you, but old meemaw out in rural USA that grew up during civil rights will likely never view African Americans favorably. But her grandchildren and their grandchildren will be exposed to and be more open to it. You can’t undo hundreds of years of slavery and fallout quickly.

5 years old? He doesn't have the capacity to understand the significance of MLK, that speech, and the civil rights movement in general.
And, MLK's entire life was devoted to race and the inequality that he was fighting. Once an individual is mature enough to comprehend why MLK is celebrated, it can not be discussed accurately without mentioning race.
That said, I applaud you for being involved in your son's development. We need more and more of this.

I know, that's why we 5,000 ft-ed it and focused on general equality without really bringing up race. Did it land? I dunno, but he was interested and engaged in the conversation which is a good sign.
