I just showed my 5 year old son the 'I Have a Dream' speech.
But why? Let the kid grow up some before you start piling America's history on to him.

The problem, is we have one party that uses race for everything; it’s where they go every time they don’t have an answer, which is every day. They don’t judge or rule by the content of character, they implicitly use the race angle to divide and conquer. We live with people that are truly evil, and have found a way to use King’s legacy to destroy America from within. It saddens me to listen to his awesome speech, knowing the legacy of what was to come…..
Irony of course being the same party that created slavery, Jim Crow, etc, also had MLK killed. Now that party is uses his image and likeness to promote racism daily.

Seems apt for MLK day and he was asking questions. It would have been a missed opportunity to just dismiss them.
But wait, are you suggesting he's too young for Schindler's List?

It's a shame that you knew to end this with downvote away when there was literally nothing wrong with what you said.

A five year old doesn't have the experience to understand that speech. Just tell the kid he was a great American, like our founding fathers or Colonel Sanders. When he brings home a black girlfriend, then you spring the speech on him.

There are many reasons to judge a person. Race shouldn't inherently be one of them.

I mean, he's not blind, but he has never mentioned anything about people who look different. Race may as well be hair color at this point.
That's exactly how kids think of it unless taught differently. I remember when my daughter was trying to describe another girl when she was 7. She was telling me who T was and described everything she was wearing and never said she was black, even thought she was the only black girl in the group. Her mind wasn't wired to think of it that way at that age.

Sounds like good parenting, entertaining a child’s basic intellectual curiosity, as well as taking a moment of your day to be mindful of its meaning.

Yes they are. Does your child not know colors? If a kid was purple she wouldn't say purple? My daughters are 5 and they describe black kids at their school as brown if they don't know names and they are trying to explain something to us

My 6 year old said "This is in black and white. How long ago was this?"
I told him it was 60 years ago.
He said "60 years ago?! Well I assume nobody is bitching about it anymore. We got all this solved, right?"
I said "Not exactly."
BTW this is 100% as accurate as OP's conversation with his 6 year old.

My 6 year old mainly makes poop jokes.
He sees race even less than your kid. Everyone poops.

Which part exactly do you find hard to believe about my op?
He asked a question, I showed him a video and we had a conversation about it.
